Summary

The groundwork for the first MCP App panel, which discovery-engine feature 27 now serves as ui://aipos/opportunities (engine side merged, PRs #151–#156 there). Docs only; nothing under plugins/ changes, so there's no version bump.

panels/BRAND.md

The Accelerated Innovation Brand Book V01, applied to a view rendered inside someone else's chat.

  • The host's look, plus brand accents and one small mark. Surfaces and font come from the host's MCP Apps theme variables (--color-background-primary, --font-sans, …), with the brand neutrals #f2f2f2 and #1a1a1a as fallbacks.
  • Accents are chosen per theme from measured WCAG contrast.
    • Purple #5865e7 in light mode (4.74:1 on white).
    • Light blue #0abeef in dark mode (7.98:1 on #1a1a1a). It fails as text on light surfaces (2.18:1).
    • Dark purple is for light-mode headings only; it's invisible on dark (1.05:1).
    • The full table is in the doc.
  • The host's font is required, not a preference. Poppins can't be used: the engine contract forbids external requests, and the MCP Apps default CSP has no font-src, which also blocks an inlined data: font. The brand book's own system-font exception covers this.
  • The mark: the official SVG, unaltered, at the brand book's minimum sizes, in the right variant for the theme. The panel ships without a mark until the artwork is supplied.
  • Source notes flag three brand book discrepancies for the brand owner: secondary Blue and Yellow have RGB values that disagree with their hex codes, and the wordmark minimum is given as both 18 px and 25 px.
  • The panel PR checklist that discovery-engine feature 27 (N12) requires.

docs/plans/2026-10-23-opportunities-panel.md

  • Location: panels/ sits beside viewers/, because the two have different release paths (the plugin ships viewers/; the engine serves panels/) and different gates.
  • Behaviour: open, filter, drill in (evidence as references only), hand back via ui/message, plus the fallbacks.
  • The MCP Apps 2026-01-26 bridge messages. The SDK handles these (see below).
  • The contract test on the built file: the engine's byte limit, UTF-8, no external requests, and only the allowed tool names.
  • Increments 2–6: through the release, the discovery-engine bump PR and verification in a real host.
  • Demo prerequisites and open questions.

The SDK decision

Marty Bradley chose the bridge approach for increment 2 on 2026-10-23. It is recorded in the plan.

  • Official SDK. The panel uses @modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps, pinned to exactly 2.0.3, behind a small bridge.mjs adapter. The adapter keeps the SDK instance private and offers only the panel's named operations: the three allowed reads, opening record links and the optional hand-back. It never exposes a general tool-call method. model.mjs stays pure and doesn't import the SDK.
  • Bundled locally. build.mjs (esbuild) replaces build.py. package.json and package-lock.json pin exact versions, and the SDK is inlined into the single HTML file, with no CDN or runtime loading. CI runs npm ci before build.mjs --check.
  • Engine size limit (pending, cross-repo). Probe builds of the SDK alone produced 455,884 bytes (app-with-deps) and 601,224 bytes (the default entry point) of JavaScript. Both exceed the engine's current 256,000-byte limit. The plan proposes 1 MiB (1,048,576 bytes) for the complete HTML file. discovery-engine has to raise its loader limit and update its tests and docs before the panel can be pinned. The other rules stay as they are: single file, UTF-8, hash verification, no external requests and allowed tools only.
  • Early host check. Before the full page is built, increment 2 proves a minimal panel in Claude Desktop: initial result, a detail call, theme changes and resizing. The fixtures include captured MCP results and errors, so tests check the boundary between the REST {data, error} envelope and MCP structuredContent.

Test plan

  • pytest tests: 925 passed, 6 skipped
  • check_version_bump.py: no plugin files changed
  • CI (validate.yml)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Added planning documentation for a proposed opportunities panel, outlining its expected browsing, filtering, drill-in, hand-back, and fallback behavior. The panel itself is not implemented in this change.
    • Added panel branding guidance covering host themes, accessible colors and typography, icons, and layout.
    • Documented build and review requirements, including file-size limits, external-request restrictions, allowed tools, open decisions, and a release checklist.

panels/BRAND.md applies the Accelerated Innovation Brand Book V01 to MCP App panels. The rule
is the host's look plus brand accents and one small mark:
- accent colours chosen per theme from measured WCAG contrast;
- the host's font, required because the MCP Apps default CSP blocks fonts;
- left-aligned type, and status never shown by colour alone;
- the official mark, unaltered;
- source notes on three brand book discrepancies, and the PR checklist discovery-engine
  feature 27 (N12) requires.

docs/plans/2026-10-23-opportunities-panel.md plans the first panel: panels/ beside viewers/
and why; behaviour; the MCP Apps 2026-01-26 bridge; the contract test on the built file;
increments 2-6 through release, the engine bump PR and host verification; open questions.

No plugin files change, so no version bump.

- Around line 68-70: Resolve the v1 hand-back scope in the plan before Increment
3: either define the `ui/message` payload and consumer contract if hand-back is
included, or remove hand-back from v1 behavior and acceptance tests if it is
excluded. Align Open Question 4 and the mock-host journey with that decision.
- Around line 111-112: Update the validate.yml workflow to run the opportunities
panel build check with build.py --check and the Node test for
panels/opportunities/model.test.mjs, in addition to its existing pytest job, so
both panel checks run on every PR.

Review comments at @panels/BRAND.md:
- Around line 80-84: Update the secondary-colour status guidance to prohibit red
and blue as status markers on dark surfaces unless compliant variants meet the
required 3:1 contrast; otherwise describe them as decorative only. Keep the
existing requirement to pair status with a word or icon.
- Around line 51-55: Update the theming guidance around
`ui/notifications/host-context-changed` to state that each partial host-context
update must be merged with the current context, unless discovery-engine already
merges it before delivery, so omitted `styles.variables` are retained.
- Around line 74-76: Update the theme accent guidance to validate the purple and
light-blue accents against the resolved panel surface for the required contrast
thresholds, or explicitly restrict supported host surface values to those for
which the accents meet those thresholds.
- Around line 20-26: Update the “No external requests” section in BRAND.md to
describe the MCP Apps default CSP accurately: allow `self` and inline
scripts/styles, block connections with `connect-src 'none'`, and note that fonts
are blocked because `font-src` is absent under `default-src 'none'`. Attribute
the stricter inline-only and no-external-request requirements to the
discovery-engine contract, while preserving the Poppins conclusion with its
explanation distinguishing that contract from the standard CSP.

BRAND.md:
- the inline-only rule is attributed to the engine, and the MCP Apps default CSP is described
  as it is (self and inline scripts and styles, data: images, no connections, no fonts);
- partial host-context updates are merged, never replacing the current context;
- accents are checked at runtime against the resolved host surface, falling back to host
  colours;
- status uses the host's semantic colours first. Brand secondaries that miss 3:1 on a surface
  are decorative only there, with a per-surface table.

Plan: hand-back in v1 becomes decision Q4, taken before increment 2 (it defines the ui/message
payload if yes), and increment 3 tests hand-back only then. Increment 4 names the new
validate.yml steps (build.py --check and the panel's node tests).

Record the decision to build the panel's bridge on the official
@modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps SDK (exact 2.0.3) behind a narrow
bridge.mjs adapter, bundled locally with a locked dependency tree and a
build.mjs (esbuild) in place of build.py.

Measured SDK bundles exceed the engine's 256,000-byte ceiling, so the
plan proposes a 1 MiB limit as a pending cross-repository contract change
that discovery-engine must land before the panel is pinned. Increment 2
now includes an early Claude Desktop integration check, and the fixtures
cover the REST-envelope vs MCP structuredContent boundary.
