Summary

Builds the read-only opportunities panel that discovery-engine serves as ui://aipos/opportunities beside list_opportunities. This covers increments 2–4 of docs/plans/2026-10-23-opportunities-panel.md, except increment 2's Claude Desktop check (see Blocked below). Nothing under plugins/ changes, so there's no version bump.

What the panel does: ranked list (title, composite score, five components, active work-item links) · filter and sort over the loaded rows, saying so when more exist · "load more" through list_opportunities · drill-in to personas, lineage reference and evidence references only (study measurements when present) · record links through the host's ui/open-link · empty, refused, cancelled and stale states. No hand-back in v1 (Q4: read-only first).

How it's built

  • bridge.mjs is the only code that touches the SDK (@modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps 2.0.3, app-with-deps entry, exact pin and lockfile). It registers handlers before connecting, exposes named reads only and returns {ok, data} / {ok: false, code, message}. Engine errors arrive as isError with the text Error executing tool <name>: <CODE>: <message> and no structuredContent (found by capturing them), so the bridge parses the code from that text.
  • model.mjs is pure (rows, paging, filters, provenance). It merges partial host-context updates one level deeper than the SDK does, so a partial styles update keeps the rest (BRAND.md). It checks each brand accent against the resolved host background and falls back to host colours when one fails.
  • build.mjs produces one file, 449,252 bytes, and a clean npm ci reproduced it byte for byte. The SDK's prebuilt bundle contains zod, MCP core/client (Apache-2.0), @cfworker/json-schema and content-type, with none of their notices. Their licence texts are now inside the file. The build checks a fingerprint for each and fails on an SDK version that hasn't been reviewed.
  • Fixtures: the engine's three published samples (paths and SHA-256 in fixtures/SOURCES.json), plus eleven CallToolResults captured from the engine's real MCP server at discovery-engine 6d6d625 (fixtures/capture_mcp.py). Tests verify that the panel sees structuredContent (the samples' data), never the REST envelope.

Blocked: the engine's size limit

The engine binds at most 256,000 bytes. This file is 449,252. tests/test_panel_contract.py enforces the proposed 1,048,576 (MAX_BYTES, marked as proposed). Until discovery-engine raises MAX_BUNDLE_BYTES (and updates ADR-AIG-039, ui_handoff.md, the feature 27 nfrs and its boundary tests), three things wait:

  • the Claude Desktop check;
  • the release (increment 5);
  • the pin (increment 6).

That engine PR comes next.

Test plan

  • npm test in panels/opportunities: 32 passed (model and bridge, against captured results)
  • node check-page.mjs: all six scenarios pass in real Chrome. It uses a mock host built on the SDK's own AppBridge, with the panel in a sandboxed allow-scripts iframe under the MCP Apps default CSP. Covered: open; more; filter; work-item filter; sort; keyboard-only drill-in with focus return; ui/open-link; theme-only then colours-only host-context updates (host font kept; accent falls back on a white surface); 420 px width; stale past 24 h; refused (INSUFFICIENT_SCOPE); empty; failed evidence read shown rather than treated as "none"; cancelled; the published samples. Zero console errors, zero CSP violations, zero remote requests; size reports reach the host. Only the three allowed tools were called.
  • pytest tests: 970 passed, 6 skipped. 45 of these are panel contract tests, and every rule also runs on planted violations: each forbidden tool name, 20 external-request forms, invalid UTF-8, and the size limit at −1, 0 and +1.
  • A planted change to style.css made node build.mjs --check fail; restored, it passes
  • check_version_bump.py: no plugin files changed
  • CI: the new panel job (npm ci, npm test, build.mjs --check) and the pytest job
  • Claude Desktop check (after the engine budget change)

Panel PR checklist (panels/BRAND.md)

  • Light and dark screenshots attached, at the default panel size and a narrow width (taken by check-page.mjs; to be attached by hand)
  • Surfaces, text and font come from the host theme, with fallbacks; no brand background, gradient behind text or web font
  • Accent is purple in light mode and light blue in dark; dark purple only for light-mode headings; each use is checked against the resolved host surface and falls back to the host colour when it fails
  • Text meets 4.5:1 and UI parts 3:1, by the runtime check (unit-tested against the BRAND.md table)
  • Status uses host semantic colours first, is never colour alone (icon and words), and uses no secondary marked ✗ for the surface
  • Host-context updates merge into the current context
  • No mark while the official artwork is outstanding
  • Left-aligned, ragged right; no text effects
  • Icons are thin-outline inline SVGs, decorative and aria-hidden, with meaning carried by text
  • The built file passes the panel contract test (at the proposed limit; see Blocked)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a read-only Opportunities panel for browsing ranked opportunities, with search, linked-status filtering, sorting, and pagination.
    • View opportunity details, personas, evidence, scores, and data provenance.
    • The panel adapts to host themes and supports keyboard navigation and opening available links.
    • Clear status and error messages explain empty results, stale data, and failed requests.
    • Opportunity details show problem and evidence information separately, so an issue loading one does not hide the other.

Build the read-only opportunities panel that discovery-engine serves as
ui://aipos/opportunities: the ranked list with score components and
active work-item links, filter and sort over loaded rows, "load more"
paging, and drill-in to personas, lineage and evidence references.
Hand-back is out of v1 (Q4: read-only first).

- bridge.mjs is the only code that touches the official MCP Apps SDK
  (@modelcontextprotocol/ext-apps 2.0.3, app-with-deps entry). It offers
  named reads only and normalizes results, parsing the engine's error
  code from the isError text.
- model.mjs is pure: rows, paging, filters, provenance, a deep
  host-context merge, and WCAG checks of each brand accent against the
  resolved host surface, falling back to host colours.
- build.mjs bundles everything into one 449,270-byte HTML file with the
  licence notices of every library inside the SDK bundle. It fails on an
  SDK version whose contents have not been reviewed.
- Fixtures: the engine's published samples (with SHA-256), plus
  CallToolResults captured from its MCP server at 6d6d625.
- Checks: 31 node tests; check-page.mjs drives the built file in Chrome
  inside a mock host built on the SDK's AppBridge, under the default
  CSP; tests/test_panel_contract.py enforces the engine release contract
  and runs every rule on planted violations; a new validate.yml job runs
  npm ci, the tests and build.mjs --check.

The contract test uses the proposed 1 MiB ceiling. The engine's limit
is still 256,000 bytes, so the Claude Desktop check, release and pin
wait for that discovery-engine change.

📝 Walkthrough

This PR adds a read-only Opportunities MCP App panel for paginated opportunities, problem details, and evidence. It adds an SDK bridge, data model, captured fixtures, mock host, and build and validation tooling. The documented bundle size is 449,252 bytes, and the proposed 1 MiB engine limit is pending.

Changes: Opportunities panel

Layer / File(s) Summary
Data model and fixture coverage
panels/opportunities/model.mjs, panels/opportunities/model.test.mjs, panels/opportunities/fixtures/*
The model validates and shapes opportunity, problem, and evidence results; supports pagination, filtering, sorting, and formatting; and derives theme colors from host context. Fixtures include engine samples and captured MCP successes and errors. A capture script records MCP responses with provenance.
MCP Apps bridge and mock host
panels/opportunities/bridge.mjs, panels/opportunities/bridge.test.mjs, panels/opportunities/mock-host.mjs
The bridge registers host handlers, wraps named read operations, normalizes tool results, and reports host failures. The mock host supplies fixtures and records calls, links, and size changes.
Panel interface and interactions
panels/opportunities/app.mjs, panels/opportunities/template.html, panels/opportunities/style.css, panels/opportunities/README.md
The panel renders opportunity lists and details, supports paging and list controls, and handles host context, keyboard navigation, and error states. The template and styles provide accessible, responsive views.
Build and release validation
panels/opportunities/build.mjs, panels/opportunities/check-page.mjs, tests/test_panel_contract.py, .github/workflows/validate.yml, panels/BRAND.md, docs/plans/2026-10-23-opportunities-panel.md, .gitattributes, panels/opportunities/package.json, panels/opportunities/licenses/*
The build bundles the panel into one HTML file and checks dependency licenses and fingerprints. Browser, contract, and CI checks validate interactions, size and content rules, tests, and build freshness. The plan and brand guide record the measured bundle size, pending engine limit change, and read-only v1 scope.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 28da8

The change is mergeable with awareness that the severed-link test gap remains. The panel still needs the planned engine limit change before host validation and release.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 21a7b

The panel exposes named read operations, renders returned text without interpreting markup, and filters record links to HTTP(S). No introduced security vulnerability was established. Production link-opening controls and cancellation behavior remain unverified, and real-host validation is still pending.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Influence over returned record URLs can affect destinations offered to the panel user, but the traced ordinary-click path delegates opening to the host. The available evidence does not establish host-side fetching, inherited credentials, cross-tenant access or the maximum privileged scope of that consumer.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — safeLink rejects malformed, relative and non-HTTP(S) URLs but does not restrict HTTP(S) origins. This is a protocol-safety control, not destination authorization. The local host accepts links except for a refusal fixture, so it cannot demonstrate production navigation policy.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The read-only operation set limits demonstrated consequences of stale responses to presentation and link selection. However, selected-ID checks alone do not establish isolation across a future host identity change or reconnect. Such isolation depends on lifecycle guarantees absent from the supplied production evidence.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before production pinning, validate the target host's safe external-link behavior and its cancellation, teardown and identity-change guarantees. Where those guarantees do not invalidate pending work, use request generations and explicit state invalidation; check returned problem identity where the response contract supplies it.

Add a non-active link to the unit-test input.

The captured fixture contains only an active link. The unit test does not exercise exclusion of non-active links. The browser assertion also passes because its input contains no OPP-99. This is a test-coverage improvement, not a current panel failure.

Suggested fix
- // The fixture also holds a severed link (OPP-99); only the active one is shown.
   assert.deepEqual(rows[0].links.map(l => l.reference), ['aha:OPP-12']);
+ // The captured fixture has no severed link, so add one for this filter test.
+  const page = mcp('list-opportunities');
+  const severed = {...page.items[0].links[0], external_reference: 'aha:OPP-99', status: 'severed'};
+  const planted = toRows({...page, items: [{...page.items[0], links: [...page.items[0].links, severed]}]});
+  assert.deepEqual(planted[0].links.map(l => l.reference), ['aha:OPP-12']);

Comment thread panels/opportunities/app.mjs Resolved
…on-active links

Addresses the CodeRabbit review of #99. focus() returns undefined, so the
fallback always moved focus to More, and the nth-child lookup picked the
wrong row under a non-rank sort. The page check now loads more while
sorted by title. The model test now plants a severed link, since the
engine's capture holds active links only.
