We'll also discuss this extensions PR, but my main feedback is that the jpeg codec should not change the data that is passed in upon encoding. It should throw errors, if incompatible data is being written. Otherwise, it should rely on other codecs (e.g. transpose, reshape) to make the data compatible with what jpeg can store.

This is not a published build, but a custom snapshot built locally that is 0.3.1 with zarr-developers/zarr-java#81 and zarr-developers/zarr-java#88 merged in, and minor changes to allow zarr-java to compile.

quality, subsampling and the configuration itself are now required instead of being silently defaulted (a missing quality used to become 0). The written zarr.json always contains every required parameter, and grayscale data accepts the spec-mandated subsampling [[1, 1]]. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Add JPEG codec (v3)
Implements an array → bytes JPEG codec for the Zarr v3 codec pipeline, compatible with neuroglancer's precomputed "jpeg" chunk encoding.
