Summary

External callback actions require a short-lived, one-time nonce so cross-tab and delayed activation callbacks can be validated before they execute.

Related to OS-983. Dependency refresh #2098 is merged.

Resolution

Use @unraid/shared-callbacks 3.4.0 and its client createCallback factory. Pass the nonce through the dedicated send and generateUrl arguments and validate the returned encrypted payload.nonce. The sender remains a return URL; its query parameters do not supply nonce authority.

Nonces remain in localStorage for 30 minutes to support callbacks returning in a separate tab. Activation links are generated when opened, and duplicate callback processing is ignored.

Reviewer Considerations

The callback responder must echo the receiver-issued nonce unchanged in its reply. Missing, expired, unknown, malformed, and reused nonces are rejected on URL callbacks. Direct in-process calls retain the existing relative-sender compatibility. Live Account-to-WebGUI behavior has not been tested in this update.

Verification

  • 78 callback, callback-helper, and purchase tests passed, including an encrypted URL round trip with the published callback package.
  • Targeted ESLint, Prettier, GraphQL code generation, and git diff --check passed.
  • Full web type-check remains blocked: the original and updated PR code produce the same 134 TypeScript diagnostics, with none in the callback store or its tests.
  • Web build and onboarding component tests remain blocked by the UI dependency build: unplugin-dts cannot resolve @vue/language-core, leaving @unraid/ui without build output.

Walkthrough

The onboarding license step now resolves its activation URL when opened. Callback actions add expiring nonces to eligible sender URLs and validate callback payloads before saving callback data.

Changes

Callback nonce validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Add nonces to callback URLs
web/src/store/callbackActions.ts, web/__test__/store/callbackActions.test.ts
Callback send and URL-generation methods add a nonce to eligible sender URLs and store its 30-minute expiry. They pass the sender argument when the underlying method supports it. Sender URLs have fragments and existing data parameters removed. Tests cover nonce generation and storage.
Track and validate callback data
web/src/store/callbackActions.ts, web/__test__/store/callbackActions.test.ts
The store extracts callback data from the query parameter or data fragment and skips URL data it already processed. External payloads must pass nonce validation. Invalid or expired requests clear callback data and set an error status. Tests cover missing, reused, and expired nonces.

Onboarding activation URL

Layer / File(s) Summary
Resolve activation URL when opened
web/src/components/Onboarding/OnboardingModal.vue, web/src/components/Onboarding/steps/OnboardingLicenseStep.vue
The modal passes a URL-producing function to the license step. The step resolves the URL when activation opens and uses it for external or same-window navigation.

Activation may fail without a useful error when browser storage is unavailable. Handle that condition; the test corrections can be made alongside it.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 53360

The new callback check improves protection for nonce-bearing requests, but its behavior depends on the callback library and includes a compatibility exception. That leaves the intended protection uncertain for some callback forms. No newly exploitable path has been established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: Nonce issuance depends on runtime function length rather than a verified sender-capability contract. If the callback library produces an absolute-sender return URL while taking either shorter branch, a legitimate callback will have no stored nonce and will be rejected. The library signature and produced URL forms remain unverified.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — Accepted external callback actions can install keys, set account sign-in or sign-out state, and initiate OS updates. The affected control is in the web callback flow; no infrastructure or service-topology change is established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Browser-facing watcher calls reach the store's callback save path, and the local validator permits nonce-free relative-looking senders. Whether the imported watcher can emit such a sender from attacker-controlled navigation is unverified. The nonce-free exposure predates this PR, so this is not an established new vulnerability.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — For an external payload with a nonce, validation checks a stored safe-integer expiry and removes the record before action dispatch. Classification as external requires a forUpc payload with at least one action; it does not itself authenticate the sender.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The separate localStorage read and removal establish same-tab consumption, but do not establish atomic one-time consumption across concurrent tabs. A failure or interruption after consumption also requires recovery other than validating the same URL again; the supported recovery path was not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Verify the callback library's sender and watcher contracts, then distinguish trusted in-process callbacks from browser-delivered callbacks at an explicit boundary rather than by sender-string syntax or function length.
  • proposed — Define the intended interruption, concurrent-tab, and partial-action recovery behavior for consumed nonces before relying on them as a cross-tab one-time guarantee.

P1 Badge Preserve nonce state across noopener callback tabs

When the UI is embedded, the activation flow opens the generated URL in OnboardingLicenseStep.openActivate with noopener, noreferrer, so the returning tab is a separate top-level browsing context and does not have this tab's sessionStorage. When Account redirects that tab back to the WebGUI, the nonce lookup fails and rejects an otherwise valid activation callback; persist the nonce across this flow or avoid requiring it for that isolated tab.

P2 Badge Allow callback flows longer than ten minutes

The nonce is unconditionally expired after ten minutes, but this store launches interactive account, purchase, renewal, and activation callbacks. A user who spends more than ten minutes signing in, completing payment, or handling approval will return with a valid callback that is rejected before its action (such as automatic key installation) runs; use an expiry compatible with these user-driven flows.

P1 Badge Update callback test senders for nonce validation

The existing callback store tests construct valid external payloads with sender: 'test' (for example, web/__test__/store/callbackActions.test.ts:195), but new URL(payload.sender) throws for that value and this path now returns false. Those tests expect the callback to enter loading, so the callback store test suite will fail until their fixtures use absolute sender URLs or explicitly cover this rejection case.

Useful? React with 👍 / 👎.

web/src/store/callbackActions.ts:41-68
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Handle unavailable localStorage before generating activation URLs.

generateUrl now calls localStorage.setItem() before it returns the URL. Browsers can throw when storage is disabled or its quota is exhausted. The onboarding click does not catch this exception, so window.open() or window.location.href is never reached. Keep the nonce requirement fail-closed, but return an explicit storage failure and handle it in OnboardingLicenseStep.openActivate and other sender callers. Do not return a URL unless its nonce was persisted.

Assert that the first callback is accepted.

The test currently checks only the state after the second save. Since nonce validation removes the marker before returning its result, two rejected saves can still produce the same final state. Assert that the first save stores the callback data before testing one-time consumption.
