Summary

  • Upstream zstd's own command-line suites (v1.5.7 tests/playTests.sh and tests/cli-tests) run against our zstd in CI on Linux and macOS, and pass.
  • Our CLI is cross-validated against the reference CLI on silesia, canterbury, the first MiB of enwik8 and the decodecorpus fixtures: every file round-trips both ways, and size and time ratios are held to 1.05 and 1.5 (time where the reference's run reaches a second, below which process start-up dominates) and charted on the bench dashboard.
  • Real programs built against the reference library run with ours swapped in: GNU tar, zstdcat, bsdtar and rsync.
  • The CLI and encoder fixes the suites needed.

Changes

  • CLI, matching the reference command where scripts read it: a level past the scale is reduced, -# levels read as 32-bit values, the summary stays under -q --progress, outputs take their source's timestamps, a forced output may replace a later input, -vv prints the compression parameters, --train replaces an existing dictionary and refuses to compress the dictionary with itself, the training memory limit and decoding failures are reported as the reference reports them, -b with any spelling of decompression benchmarks decoding alone and weighs -M before reading, --format=zstd overrides the format a tool name selects, input shorter than a magic number passes through instead of being named a foreign format, overflowing numbers are named by the type they are read into, -T notes that multi-threading is disabled, the other tool names (zstdmt, unzstd, zstdcat) are answered, sizes and refusals use the reference's wording, and --version names this tool.
  • C ABI: ZSTD_decompressStream holds back a decoded frame's last input byte until its output is all handed out, so a caller that stops on empty input inside an open frame (libarchive's reader) does not see a finished frame as truncated.
  • Decoding errors map to libzstd's codes and messages (FrameDecoderError::code, ErrorCode); find_decompressed_size sums what a run of frames declares.
  • Encoder: the LDM hash rate and bucket size are derived as upstream derives them, and btultra2's statistics pass runs with long-distance matching on.
  • scripts/upstream-conformance.sh runs the pinned upstream suites; the cases this build cannot run are listed in it with their reasons.
  • scripts/cross-validate.sh + scripts/cross_validate.py: the reference CLI built from the pinned release, corpora fetched against their digests, both tools --single-thread.
  • scripts/reverse-deps.sh: a preloaded run counts only when the dynamic linker bound the program's ZSTD_* calls to our object; at least three consumers must pass.
  • CI: conformance and reverse-deps on every pull request; cross-validate on push to main, publishing benchmark-xval.json to the dashboard; merge-wasm-bench.py becomes the shared merge-timeseries.py.
  • Dashboard: a cross-validation section with the size and time ratios per corpus and level over time; BENCHMARKS.md documents it.

Testing

  • fmt, clippy in every CI configuration, rustdoc, the codec suites, the C ABI tests, the FFI parity tests and doctests pass locally; the CLI tests pass on i686.
  • On Linux x86_64: the upstream suites including --test-large-data, the cross-validation matrix and the reverse-dependency run pass. The one time ratio near its limit is silesia at -3 (1.36-1.52), a codec gap tracked in perf(encode): level 3 compresses large text at 1.7x libzstd's time #606.

Replaces #609 (the same change, squashed).

Closes #132

Summary by CodeRabbit

    • Added frame-size inspection and more consistent error categories and messages.
    • Expanded CLI compatibility with familiar format aliases, decode-only benchmarking, and improved file handling.
  • Improvements

    • Improved streaming decompression reliability and compression behavior.
    • Updated progress summaries and size formatting for clearer output.
    • Added conformance and interoperability checks across supported platforms and common tools.

…rence CLI and real consumers

- Upstream zstd's own command-line suites (v1.5.7 tests/playTests.sh and
tests/cli-tests) run against our zstd in CI on Linux and macOS, from
the pinned release tarball; the cases this build cannot run are listed
  in scripts/upstream-conformance.sh with their reasons.
- scripts/cross-validate.sh builds the reference CLI from the pinned
release and fetches silesia, canterbury and enwik8 against their
digests; cross_validate.py round-trips every file through both tools
both ways, both single-threaded, and holds the summed size and time
ratios to 1.05 and 1.5 (time where the reference's run reaches a
second), each file timed as the fastest of three alternating runs.
CI runs it on main when the codec or the harness changes and charts it
on the bench dashboard, each snapshot with the limits it was held to.
- scripts/reverse-deps.sh runs GNU tar, zstdcat, bsdtar and rsync with
our CLI and shared object swapped in; a preloaded run counts only when
the dynamic linker bound the program's ZSTD_* calls to our object, and
at least three consumers must pass. CI runs it on every pull request.
- C ABI: ZSTD_decompressStream holds back a decoded frame's last input
byte until its output is all handed out, so a caller that stops on
empty input inside an open frame (libarchive's reader) does not see a
  finished frame as truncated.
- CLI, matching the reference command where scripts read it: levels past
the scale are reduced, -# reads 32-bit values, outputs take their
source's timestamps, -vv prints the compression parameters, --train
replaces an existing dictionary and refuses to compress the dictionary
with itself, refusals and sizes use the reference's wording, -b with
any spelling of decompression benchmarks decoding alone and weighs -M
against the inputs and dictionary before reading them, --format=zstd
overrides a tool name's format, the other tool names are answered,
short input passes through instead of being named a foreign format,
overflowing numbers are named by the type they are read into, and
  --version names this tool.
- Decoding errors map to libzstd's codes and messages
  (FrameDecoderError::code, ErrorCode); find_decompressed_size sums what
  a run of frames declares.
- Encoder: the LDM hash rate and bucket size are derived as upstream
derives them, and btultra2's statistics pass runs with long-distance
  matching on.

📝 Walkthrough

The PR updates structured CLI behavior, decoder APIs, streaming decompression, and encoder parameter derivation. It adds cross-validation, upstream conformance and reverse-dependency checks, plus CI publication and dashboard reporting for benchmark snapshots.

Changes: Cross-validation and compatibility checks

Layer / File(s) Summary
Build the reference CLI and compare corpora
scripts/upstream-zstd.sh, scripts/cross-validate.sh, scripts/cross_validate.py
The scripts build the pinned upstream CLI, prepare corpora, check round trips and size and time ratios, and can write JSON records.
Generalize timeseries merging
.github/scripts/merge-timeseries.py, .github/scripts/parse-wasm-bench.py, .github/workflows/ci.yml, BENCHMARKS.md
The merger uses generic timeseries inputs and run metadata. The wasm publisher and related documentation use the shared merger.
Run conformance and reverse-dependency checks
scripts/upstream-conformance.sh, scripts/reverse-deps.sh, .github/workflows/ci.yml
CI runs upstream conformance suites on Ubuntu and macOS, performs consumer interoperability checks, and includes both jobs in the aggregate result. It also runs and publishes cross-validation snapshots.
Display cross-validation snapshots
.github/bench-dashboard/index.html, BENCHMARKS.md
The dashboard charts size and time ratios and recorded limits by corpus, level, and snapshot. The documentation describes the harness and records.

Structured CLI compatibility

Layer / File(s) Summary
Parse options and select CLI modes
zstd/src/bin/structured-zstd/main.rs, zstd/src/bin/structured-zstd/tests.rs
Parsing, presets, error statuses, level clamping, thread settings, and format selection now cover additional upstream-compatible cases.
Process inputs and report decode results
zstd/src/bin/structured-zstd/main.rs, zstd/src/bin/structured-zstd/tests.rs
The CLI distinguishes decoded frames from pass-through input, reports decode errors with input names, continues after non-compression failures, preserves source modification times, and processes output collisions in sequence.
Add decode benchmarks and update training behavior
zstd/src/bin/structured-zstd/main.rs, zstd/src/bin/structured-zstd/tests.rs
The CLI adds decode-only benchmarks and training memory notices. Training uses a shared insufficient-samples error and can replace an existing regular destination without -f.
Align size and progress summaries
zstd/src/bin/structured-zstd/display.rs, zstd/src/bin/structured-zstd/display/tests.rs, zstd/src/bin/structured-zstd/main.rs, zstd/src/bin/structured-zstd/tests.rs
Progress settings control summary verbosity. Human-readable size precision and verbose compression parameter and list output are updated.

Decoder APIs and streaming behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Classify decoder errors
zstd/src/decoding/errors.rs, zstd/src/decoding/errors/tests.rs, c-api/src/error.rs, c-api/src/tests.rs
The codec classifies decoder errors and provides libzstd-compatible messages. The C API maps those classifications to C error codes.
Inspect concatenated frame sizes
zstd/src/decoding/mod.rs, zstd/src/decoding/frame_inspection_tests.rs, c-api/src/frame.rs
The codec sums declared sizes across concatenated frames and reports unknown sizes or inspection errors. The C API maps these results to decompressed-size values.
Track streaming frame completion
c-api/src/context.rs, c-api/src/streaming.rs, c-api/src/tests/streams.rs
The C decoder tracks a held final input byte and uses that state when reporting frame completion. Regression tests cover streaming buffer boundaries.

Encoder parameter derivation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Adjust LDM parameters and seed-pass eligibility
zstd/src/encoding/ldm/params.rs, zstd/src/encoding/ldm/params/tests.rs, zstd/src/encoding/hc/generator.rs, zstd/src/encoding/match_generator/tests.rs
LDM parameter derivation adjusts hash rate and caps bucket size. The btultra2 seed pass no longer requires an empty LDM sequence list.

Dashboard snapshots can present ratios measured on only part of a corpus as complete, which misreports compatibility evidence. The decode benchmark can also use more memory than the -M limit when --patch-from supplies a large dictionary. Both have localized fixes and should be addressed or explicitly accepted before merge.

Explanation

The CLI, codec, C ABI, conformance, cross-validation, reverse-dependency, CI, and dashboard changes support the compatibility evidence required by #132. The generic timeseries merger supports cross-validation publication. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 84.92% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 179 functions across 25 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Active issue #132 has unmet coding requirements. scripts/upstream-conformance.sh removes progress/ and basic/version.sh* in addition to the permitted file-stat/ and multi-thread-only cases. The CI ABI check compares only sorted symbol names from fresh builds. The repository has no checked-in symbol snapshot or binding comparison. The C ABI tests do not provide upstream size assertions for ZSTD_inBuffer, ZSTD_outBuffer, and ZSTD_frameHeader. The conformance, cross-validation, reverse-dependency, and dashboard work otherwise addresses #132.

Resolution

Run all #132 CLI cases except file-stat/ and the stated multi-thread-only cases, or document an issue-approved exception. Add a checked-in nm -D snapshot and compare symbol bindings as well as names. Add static size assertions for ZSTD_inBuffer, ZSTD_outBuffer, and ZSTD_frameHeader against upstream layouts.

- cross_validate.py records a tool that fails to compress as a failure,
leaves that file out of both sums and goes on, so every other cell is
still measured and the JSON snapshot is still written; a cell with no
file compressed on both sides has no ratio rather than a division by
  zero.
- The dashboard lists each snapshot's ratios and limits as a table under
  the cross-validation chart.
- The cross-validate job checks out without persisting credentials: its
build and the reference's make run third-party code, and only the
gh-pages checkout needs a token, which it brings itself.
- -b -d asserts, rather than checks, that decoding produced what the
frames declared: the decoder already fails a frame that does not.
- Tests cover the parameter displays alone, compressing stdin to a
foreign format, -S with -M and with a bad input, a timed decoding
benchmark, training under -M, a device as input and a plain I/O
  error's text.

- -b -d weighs -M against the inputs and the dictionary before parsing
the dictionary or opening the trace, so a run refused on sizes alone
spends nothing first and leaves no trace file behind.
- The cross-validation chart and table key a snapshot by its timestamp
and commit, as the merge does, so two commits stamped alike stay two
points; labels show the time and the short commit.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Bound compression subprocesses.

If either CLI hangs on a corpus file, subprocess.run blocks the remaining measurements and prevents the JSON snapshot from being written. Set a timeout and record TimeoutExpired as a compression failure so the run can continue. The decode subprocess in scripts/cross_validate.py:64 needs the same bound. Based on learnings, process-spawning calls need timeouts to prevent indefinite blocking.

- -b -d weighs -M against twice the dictionary as well as the frames
beside one copy: the parse holds the blob and its parsed form together
(a --patch-from reference is copied whole) before any frame is read.
- A cross-validation row where a file failed to compress counts only the
files measured on both sides, input bytes included, records how many
that was as measured_files, and carries no ratio, since a subset of
the corpus does not compare with the row's history.
