Summary

  • The C ABI now exports every symbol upstream libzstd 1.5.7 exports, the ZSTD_STATIC_LINKING_ONLY / ZDICT_STATIC_LINKING_ONLY sections included, so a binary linked against upstream's full surface links against this library.
  • Every behaviour lives in the codec; c-api/ only translates. Where upstream refuses and this library can work, it works: a sequence producer next to long-distance matching keeps the long matches, ZSTD_compressSequencesAndLiterals takes a checksum or a parse without block delimiters, and an external parse is always validated, in shape and against the input it is given, so no parse yields a frame that does not decode to that input.

Replaces #601, squashed onto main as one commit.

Changes

  • Frame and buffer queries: ZSTD_isFrame, skippable frames, ZSTD_decompressionMargin, ZSTD_decodingBufferSize_min, the CDict/DDict/DStream estimates, ZSTD_getCParams / getParams / adjustCParams / checkCParams
  • ZSTD_CCtx_params objects with the experimental ZSTD_c_* parameters, ZSTD_CCtx_setCParams / setFParams / setParams, ZSTD_compress_advanced, ZSTD_createCDict_advanced2, the *_usingCCtxParams estimates. A CDict's explicit window is raised toward a source of known size as upstream raises it, through the codec's CompressionParameters::for_dictionary_frame
  • Every experimental ZSTD_d_* parameter: the frame format and window ceiling (ZSTD_DCtx_setFormat / setMaxWindowSize), forceIgnoreChecksum on every decode path, refMultipleDDicts picking a frame's DDict by its dictionary ID, maxBlockSize refusing bigger blocks, stableOutBuffer and disableHuffmanAssembly stored and read back. The rules are the codec's: FrameDecoder::set_max_block_size, reset_with_dict_handles, decode_all_with_dict_handles
  • The memory estimates budget what a context actually keeps, each part sized by the function its allocation uses; context sizes count every dictionary the context alone keeps, once
  • Stream init variants, ZSTD_resetCStream / resetDStream, the *_simpleArgs calls, ZSTD_getFrameProgression, ZSTD_toFlushNow, the *_advanced constructors (default allocator only). ZSTD_compressStream2 takes input only while its output fits the caller's buffer, and a frame one end call begins takes the input's size over a pledge; ZSTD_decompressStream takes headers, blocks, checksums and skippable frames in pieces of any size, and stops a caller that makes no progress inside a frame with upstream's noForwardProgress errors
  • One-shots (ZSTD_compress2, generateSequences, the compressSequences pair) start from a fresh session, as upstream's do
  • Buffer-less compression and decompression (ZSTD_compressBegin* / Continue / End, ZSTD_decompressBegin* / Continue), the block API, ZSTD_copyCCtx / copyDCtx
  • One-shot decompression takes the in-place layout ZSTD_decompressionMargin describes; a ZSTD_DDict is parsed when it is created and shared by the contexts that use it; a single-use prefix is spent when its frame starts, as upstream spends it
  • Sequences: encoding::sequences in the codec (parse capture, SequenceReplay, SequenceProducer, RebuiltSource), and ZSTD_generateSequences, ZSTD_compressSequences, ZSTD_compressSequencesAndLiterals (rebuilding the input one window at a time), ZSTD_sequenceBound, ZSTD_mergeBlockDelimiters, ZSTD_registerSequenceProducer on top. A FrameCompressor can borrow a prepared dictionary (DictionaryHold, new_with_matcher_and_dictionary), so a frame built from a parse references it as upstream references a CDict
  • The worker-pool parameters and thread pools are accepted and read back as upstream's multi-threaded build takes them, and frames are built on the calling thread; ZSTD_initStatic* answer NULL, a context cannot live in a caller's workspace
  • ZDICT_addEntropyTablesFromBuffer, ZDICT_trainFromBuffer_legacy
  • CI builds upstream libzstd at the pinned tag and requires each of its exports to be exported here, in place of a hand-kept list

Testing

Formatting, clippy across the feature sets, the codec, C ABI and ffi-bench suites, doctests and rustdoc pass; expected values in the C ABI tests were read from upstream libzstd 1.5.7.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes support issue [#127]'s v1.5.7 advanced, streaming, dictionary, training, parameter, ABI, and codec requirements. The C-ABI tests, export verification, documentation, and codec changes support those objectives. The reviewed changes do not add the excluded CLI, legacy-frame support, or actual multi-threaded compression.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#127] requires every listed wrapper to compile, link, and run from a C consumer. The reviewed C consumer covers selected one-shot, parameter, streaming, dictionary, training, and estimate calls. It does not call all listed wrappers. Missing coverage includes ZSTD_CCtxParams_*, buffer-less APIs, sequence APIs, skippable-frame APIs, and several advanced dictionary and frame-query variants. The Rust C-ABI tests and the export check prove broader implementation and symbol presence, but they do not satisfy the C-consumer exercise requirement.

Resolution

Extend c-api/tests/c_consumer.c, or add an equivalent C consumer test, to call every wrapper listed in issue [#127]. Keep the test build and execution in CI.

🟡 Minor · input_needed does not apply the configured block limit. · frame_decoder.rs:1624-1630

zstd/src/decoding/frame_decoder.rs:1624-1630
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

input_needed does not apply the configured block limit.

The documentation for input_needed says that a block stating more than the frame's block maximum "needs only its header". The check uses decoding::block_decoder::block_maximum(window), so it ignores set_max_block_size. If the limit is 4096, a streaming caller still waits for the whole body of a block up to 128 KiB before the decode step reports the error. Upstream ZSTD_d_maxBlockSize exists to bound that buffering.

Use state.block_maximum(), as block_content_len and start_raw_block do.

🐛 Proposed fix
-        let window = state
-            .frame_header
-            .window_size()
-            .map_or(usize::MAX, |w| usize::try_from(w).unwrap_or(usize::MAX));
-        if size > decoding::block_decoder::block_maximum(window) {
+        if size > state.block_maximum() {
             return 3;
         }

Review comment at @zstd/src/decoding/frame_decoder.rs around lines 1624 - 1630:
Update the block-size check in input_needed to compare size against
state.block_maximum() instead of deriving the limit from the frame window, so
the configured maximum is applied and oversized blocks require only their
header.
🟡 Minor · The single-Raw-block shortcut does not apply the configured block… · frame_decoder.rs:4339-4344

zstd/src/decoding/frame_decoder.rs:4339-4344
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The single-Raw-block shortcut does not apply the configured block limit.

set_max_block_size documents that the limit "Applies on every path, including decoding into a caller's buffer". This change sets the limit through buffer.set_block_limit(block_limit) (Line 4436), but only the general block loop reads it. The shortcut runs before that loop and checks n <= block_decoder::block_maximum(window), which uses only the window and 128 KiB.

Trigger: a frame whose only block is a last Raw block of 4096 bytes, for example incompressible input. Decode it with decode_all, set_max_block_size(Some(1024)), and a target large enough for the output. The shortcut copies the block and returns success. Upstream ZSTD_d_maxBlockSize refuses this frame. The C ZSTD_decompressDCtx path with parameter 1005 accepts it for the same reason.

Use the frame state's block maximum. A block over the limit then falls through to the general loop, and block_fits_the_maximum rejects it there.

🐛 Proposed fix
-                let window = state.frame_header.window_size().unwrap_or(0) as usize;
                 if bh.last_block
                     && matches!(bh.block_type, crate::blocks::block::BlockType::Raw)
                     && declared_size.is_none_or(|declared| declared == n as u64)
-                    && n <= block_decoder::block_maximum(window)
+                    && n <= state.block_maximum()
                     && probe.len() >= n
                     && output.len() >= n

Add a test that decodes a frame of one incompressible Raw block under set_max_block_size(Some(1024)).

Comment thread zstd/src/encoding/match_generator/mod.rs
- A registered sequence producer's parse is checked against the block it
  describes, not only its shape: a parse whose matches copy other bytes
  is refused as a producer failure instead of writing a frame that
  decodes to other data.
- A matcher asking for a fixed block of no bytes no longer ends the frame
  with the input unwritten; the encoder takes its own cut.
- The CDict table helper sizes tables without rows, so the row finder's
  hash cap no longer narrows them.
- The decoder's block limit also holds on the shortcut for a frame of one
  Raw block, and input_needed asks only for the header of a block past
  it.
- The buffer-less test helpers pass only the bytes asked for.
