StaticTextEmbedding.token_count() calls _ensure_model(), loading the full safetensors table even with lazy_load=True. Initialize only the tokenizer for token counting, then reuse it when embedding loads the weights. This also fixes SqrtTfStaticEmbedding through inheritance. Publish the embedding table only after weights, mapping, and tokenizer initialization finish, so concurrent embedding after token counting cannot observe partial model state.

This extends the tokenizer-only behavior from #640 to the static backend added in #805. Offline regressions use tiny real tokenizer and safetensors files to verify deferred tensor loading, repeated calls, truncation, both static classes, eager loading, and resulting embeddings. An event-controlled concurrency test checks the independently calculated output of a weighted, mapped model during initialization.

Validation on Python 3.13.5 / Windows:

  • Before the fix: both lazy-loading regression cases fail; both eager cases pass.
  • After the fix: 17 selected static/safetensors/common tests pass, including the concurrent-loading regression.
  • Ruff 0.3.4 lint/format and git diff --check pass.

No downloaded-model or GPU suite was run.

Walkthrough

token_count now initializes only the tokenizer, not the embedding tensor table. The tokenizer loads only if it has not already been initialized. Tests cover both static embedding classes with lazy loading enabled and disabled, including token limits, iterator input, resource reuse, and concurrent lazy embedding calls.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Publish tensor state before marking the model loaded.

After token counting, the tokenizer is set but embeddings is not. If two threads start embedding concurrently, one can pass _ensure_model() after load_model() assigns embeddings but before it assigns weights or token_mapping. This can produce incorrect vectors for quantized models such as Qdrant/constella-zero. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Assign weights and token_mapping before publishing embeddings, or synchronize initialization.

fastembed/text/static_embedding.py:214-217
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Publish unk_token_id before tokenizer in _ensure_tokenizer.

When a lazy static model runs token_count() and a consumed embed() iterator concurrently, _ensure_tokenizer() can publish self.tokenizer before self.unk_token_id. The embedding thread can then skip tokenizer initialization, read unk_token_id as None, and include unknown-token rows even though SKIP_UNKNOWN_TOKENS is enabled.

Suggested fix
     def _ensure_tokenizer(self) -> None:
         """Load the tokenizer without reading the embedding table, e.g. for token counting."""
         if self.tokenizer is None:

+            tokenizer, unk_token_id = load_static_tokenizer(self._model_dir)
+            self.unk_token_id = unk_token_id
+            self.tokenizer = tokenizer

Addressed the initialization-order concern in 6cc8ddd. load_model() now initializes weights, token mapping, and the tokenizer before publishing the embedding table.

Added a deterministic concurrency regression using real weighted/mapped tensor data. It reproduces the incorrect embedding on the previous PR head and passes with the fix. All 17 selected static/safetensors/common tests pass locally, along with Ruff lint and formatting checks.

Thanks for the PR, and for the quick follow-up on the load order. I'm going to close this one.

#640 skipped creating an ONNX session for token counts, which is expensive. Static models are a different case: reading the potion-base-8M or constella-zero table (about 30 MiB each) takes around 5 ms in my measurements, which is less time than loading the tokenizer. The saving only shows up when a model is created with lazy_load=True and counts tokens without ever embedding. In exchange, the change adds a state where the tokenizer is loaded but the table isn't. Keeping that state safe depends on the order of the assignments in load_model, which is easy to break later without anyone noticing. I'd rather not carry that for this saving.

If memory is the concern, for example with minishlab/potion-multilingual-128M (about 0.5 GB), you can memory-map the table instead:

from fastembed import TextEmbedding

model = TextEmbedding("minishlab/potion-multilingual-128M", lazy_load=True, mmap=True)
model.token_count(["hello world"])

With mmap=True, the table is mapped instead of read into memory. Loading is close to instant, and only the rows your texts use take memory.
