This PR fixes delayed error reporting when an embedding worker crashes before returning a result. With this, waits retry in short intervals and report the failed worker without resetting the overall timeout.

Fixes #823

Four regression cases fail on the original code. The focused tests pass on Python 3.10, 3.12 and 3.14. The full suite passes with 203 passed and 13 skipped. The configured type checks and pre-commit checks pass.

Walkthrough

Both output-wait paths in ParallelWorkerPool.semi_ordered_map now use _get_output. The helper polls the output queue at intervals of up to one second, checks worker health after empty reads, and raises Empty when the processing timeout expires. Stop signals now use _put_stop_signal, which retries when the input queue is full and raises RuntimeError if no worker remains alive.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 061fc

Passing a worker count of zero or less makes embedding calls hang for the full result timeout instead of failing immediately. The commit describes rejecting such counts, but the change does not do it. Add the validation before merging.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Check worker health during output waits" matches the main change: output waits in semi_ordered_map now check worker health while retaining the overall processing_timeout. It is specific and accurate to the changeset and the linked issue #823.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states that the PR fixes delayed error reporting when an embedding worker crashes. It explains that waits retry in short intervals, report the failed worker, and keep the overall timeout. It also references Fixes #823 and lists the test results. It is directly related to the changeset.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

PASS. Issue #823 requires health checks during both output waits and preservation of the overall timeout. semi_ordered_map now uses _get_output for the final output drain and _put_stop_signal for the queue backpressure wait. _get_output polls for at most one second, checks worker health after an empty read, and uses one monotonic deadline. _put_stop_signal retries when the input queue is full and checks worker health. These changes report a failed worker without waiting for the full result timeout.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

PASS. The diff changes only fastembed/parallel_processor.py. The output polling and stop-signal retry logic address the two blocking waits identified by issue #823. The no-live-worker failure prevents an indefinite stop-signal wait and supports the same worker-failure handling. No unrelated product behavior is present.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 66.67% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 1 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Check worker health while sending stop signals.

With one worker and 200 queued inputs, the input queue can be full when the stream ends. If the worker exits during startup without consuming an input, this put blocks forever. The final drain and its new health checks never run.

Use timed stop-signal puts and check worker health between attempts.

Update the stop-signal send using input_queue and QueueSignals.stop to use timed

shutdown blocked forever when the queue is full.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Reject nonpositive worker counts.

For num_workers <= 0, start() creates no worker processes. A nonempty stream then reaches _get_output(), which waits until processing_timeout before raising queue.Empty. Validate num_workers before starting the pool.

Review comment at @fastembed/parallel_processor.py at line 103:
Validate num_workers in the worker-pool startup flow before starting any
processes, and reject values less than or equal to zero so start() cannot leave
a nonempty stream waiting in _get_output().
