Adds packet 0x07, the value of GPUSTAT.31 from that point in the stream. In NTSC 480i with GP0(E1h).10 clear the GPU skips the rows of the parity in GPUSTAT.31 at draw time, and that bit follows the beam, so without it a dump of a 480i program replays with the wrong rows.

Writer and reader: PCSX-Redux, implemented in pcsx-redux/pcsx-redux#2488. One open point: whether this bumps the magic to v1r2. Since unknown versions must be rejected, a bump would make current readers refuse files that only add a packet they could skip, so this keeps v1r1.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Documented revision 1 packet type 0x07 for interlace field state and its effect on replayed GPUSTAT bit 31.
    • Specified when to emit the packet for interlaced NTSC 640×480 mode with GP0(E1h) bit 10 clear, and that replay uses the most recently received value.
    • Clarified that dumps without this packet do not track the field, so replay may differ from the recording.

The GPUDUMP revision 1 documentation adds packet type 0x07 for the Interlace field. It defines the payload, packet emission conditions, and replay behavior.

The revision 1 packet list adds type 0x07. The description defines its one-word payload, when dumps emit it, and how replayers use its value.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 1 (Trivial) | ~3 minutes

Change: Feature

Merge Risk: Low · up to b1852

This documentation change adds an interlace field packet to the dump format. It leaves unstated that older readers will skip the packet and may replay 480i dumps differently from the recording. Decide whether to document that outcome or bump the revision; the change is otherwise low risk.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "GPUDUMP: interlace field packet" names the main change: a new GPUDUMP packet that records the interlace field value. It matches the raw summary (packet 0x07 for GPUSTAT bit 31) and the PR objectives. It is specific and concise.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states that the PR adds packet 0x07 to record GPUSTAT.31. It explains why the packet matters for NTSC 480i replay and names the PCSX-Redux writer and reader. It also covers the open question about keeping the v1r1 magic. This matches the changeset and the objectives.

Explanation

No functions found in the changed files to evaluate docstring coverage. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

State the replay outcome for readers that skip packet 0x07.

Line 17 says a reader can ignore packets it does not understand, and line 30 requires it to skip them. A v1r1 reader that predates 0x07 therefore accepts a dump that contains it and skips the packet. On a NTSC 640x480 interlaced dump, that reader then replays without field tracking. Line 63 covers dumps that have no interlace field packet. It does not cover a reader that skips the packet in a dump that has one. The format does not state this result.

The PR keeps the magic at v1r1 on purpose. A version bump would make current readers reject files that add only skippable packets. The format must decide one of two outcomes:

  • Keep v1r1. Document in line 63 that a reader which skips 0x07 can replay the interlaced mode differently.
  • Change the revision if replay fidelity is required for older readers.

The diff below documents the first outcome. Choose the outcome before merge.

📝 Suggested documentation change
-- **Interlace field (0x07)**: This packet type contains exactly a single word, whose bit 0 is the value of GPUSTAT bit 31 from this point in the stream on. In NTSC 640x480 interlaced with GP0(E1h) bit 10 clear, the GPU skips every row whose parity equals GPUSTAT bit 31 at the time it is drawn, and that bit follows the beam, so a replay cannot derive it from the other packets. A tool should write this packet ahead of the first port 0 data recorded in that video mode, including when the dump starts in it, and again ahead of the port 0 data it applies to whenever the value changes. A tool replaying the dump should use the last value seen for GPUSTAT bit 31. A dump with no interlace field packet was recorded without tracking the field, so its replay of that video mode may differ from the recording.

b1852f1 changed what a writer and a reader have to do after the label went on: the first interlace field packet is now required even when the value never changes, and a reader no longer assumes 0 before it. Per RFC.md that restarts the seven days, which I missed when I pushed it, so the label is going back on now.
