Summary

Lets the snapshot workflow build the app under a different application ID, so it can be published as a private app through Managed Google Play / the Google Workspace admin console. io.netbird.client is already taken on Play, so a private app needs its own ID (e.g. io.netbird.client.private).

  • app/build.gradle.kts: applicationId comes from NETBIRD_APPLICATION_ID (Gradle property or env) when set and non-blank, otherwise io.netbird.client. namespace is unchanged.
  • build-snapshot.yml: new optional application_id input. When set, the run passes it to Gradle and skips writing google-services.json, since that file only registers io.netbird.client and the Google Services plugin would fail on any other ID. The signed APK/AAB are kept as workflow artifacts as before.
  • ForegroundNotification / SessionNotification: notification intents targeted the hardcoded io.netbird.client package, so in a build under another ID tapping a notification would open the public app (or nothing). They now use the app's own package name.
  • AndroidManifest.xml: the signature-level custom permission is now ${applicationId}.permission.NOTIFICATION. With the old fixed name, installing the private app next to the public one (different Play signing keys) fails with INSTALL_FAILED_DUPLICATE_PERMISSION. Nothing references the permission, so the rename has no effect on the public app.

Default builds (input empty) are unchanged apart from the permission name.

Usage

gh workflow run build-snapshot.yml --ref <branch> -f application_id=io.netbird.client.private

Testing

  • Ran :app:processDebugManifest with and without NETBIRD_APPLICATION_ID=io.netbird.client.private and checked the merged manifest: package, permission and FileProvider authority follow the override, and default to io.netbird.client without it.
  • Full build to be confirmed by the workflow run on this branch.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Android builds can now use a custom application ID, with the standard ID retained when no custom value is provided.
    • Google Services configuration is applied only when no custom application ID is specified.
  • Bug Fixes
    • App notifications now open the main screen correctly when the app uses a custom application ID.

📝 Walkthrough

The snapshot workflow accepts an optional application ID and passes it to the Android build. The build uses it for the app ID and notification permission name. Notification intents target MainActivity in the app’s package.

Changes: Custom application ID

Layer / File(s) Summary
Application ID configuration
.github/workflows/build-snapshot.yml, app/build.gradle.kts, app/src/main/AndroidManifest.xml
The workflow accepts an optional application ID and passes it to the build. Gradle uses the supplied nonblank value or defaults to io.netbird.client. Google Services configuration runs only when the input is empty. The notification permission name uses the configured application ID.
Notification package targets
tool/src/main/java/io/netbird/client/tool/ForegroundNotification.java, tool/src/main/java/io/netbird/client/tool/SessionNotification.java
Notification intents resolve MainActivity using the service or application package instead of the fixed package name.

Change: Feature

Suggested reviewers: pappz

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2d40a

Only malformed whitespace-only snapshot inputs are affected, but they can produce inconsistent default-build configuration.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2d40a

The changes preserve package-specific notification routing and existing VPN access controls. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Remaining risk is concentrated in private-build deployment and coexistence behavior that has not been verified on a device.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The new application ID enters through manual workflow input and the job environment, then is read by Gradle. It is not interpolated into the build shell command. The workflow token permissions remain read-only for contents and actions.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — VPN service control retains existing explicit component targeting, non-exported receivers, and package-scoped broadcasts. Shared action-string literals do not by themselves redirect private-install control to the public app.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The routing change preserves notification lifecycle ownership: VPNService supplies its own context, expiry and reconnect paths manage the same application's notifications, and warning work uses application context. Repetition and cancellation therefore remain within the owning installation rather than crossing to another package.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Before private distribution, validate the signed package on a device alongside the public app: verify notification actions, provider authorities, managed configuration, and the intended signing identity. This would close deployment uncertainty rather than remediate an established vulnerability.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "Make the application ID configurable for private builds" matches the main change. The PR adds an optional application_id input to the snapshot workflow, reads NETBIRD_APPLICATION_ID in app/build.gradle.kts, and updates the manifest permission and notification intent targets so a private build can use a different application ID. The title is short, specific, and states the primary goal without a file list or vague wording.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 3 functions across 3 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.
