What changed

Our account modes mixed classification, write access, and synchronization behavior. For example, Transient blocked program writes while retaining authoritative local state, but callers had to infer both properties from its name.

We now represent AccountMode with AccountKind, AccessMode, and DataFlow in two bytes. Access and synchronization are explicit, while PascalCase constants preserve concise checks such as account.is(AccountMode::Magic).

Constant Kind Access DataFlow
Magic Regular Writable None
Base Regular ReadOnly BaseToMagic
Delegated Regular Writable MagicToBase
Undelegating Regular ReadOnly MagicToBase

Uninit, System, and Closed retain the classifications that access and flow cannot determine. MirroredSystem distinguishes runtime accounts refreshed from base. Undelegating replaces Transient's name, and accounts delegated to another validator use Base. Magic means locally authoritative state without direct delegated commitment to base; an independent base counterpart may exist.

Closes #177

Impact

The mode API and encoding change. Named constants replace the old enum variants; typed getters and predicates expose access and synchronization policy. Decoding rejects unsupported combinations and reserved bits. AccountMode occupies two bytes, while the account core remains 56 bytes.

Accountsdb and ledger format versions become 2. Existing version 1 state is rejected and requires fresh state; there is no automatic migration. Replication protocol version remains 1, so producers and consumers must use the matching account encoding. Initial cloning, delegation authority, commit targets, and trusted lifecycle evidence remain host responsibilities.

Reviewer notes

Lifecycle updates validate the complete mode and slot atomically. Read-only Undelegating state remains protected and persistent; ordinary execution cannot mutate it. Transaction-final writeback accepts validated dirty transitions into Undelegating or Closed without permitting further writes, including across CPI. Access or flow changes participate in deduplication, and both System modes survive mirror reset.

The lifecycle matrix covers owned and borrowed accounts, slot ordering, and rejected-state preservation. Codec coverage checks all 65,536 two-byte inputs. All 325 workspace tests passed; all-feature Clippy and formatting passed. The extra all-feature workspace test configuration has a Shuttle harness failure also reproduced on the unchanged pre-rebase baseline.

Split account behavior into AccountKind, AccessMode, and DataFlow, packed into two bytes. Preserve concise is() checks with PascalCase mode constants and name synchronization endpoints BaseToMagic and MagicToBase.

Keep lifecycle transitions atomic, protect read-only undelegation handoffs, and validate supported encodings. Update callers, documentation, and tests. Remove the temporary design sketch.

The encoding replaces the unpublished prototype and requires fresh prototype state. Keep the replication protocol version unchanged.

📝 Walkthrough

The pull request adds an account-mode model that combines account kind, write access, and synchronization direction. It updates writeback checks, lifecycle routing, and account materialization to use the new modes. The accountsdb and ledger storage formats advance to version 2, with tests for rejecting version 1 files. Documentation describes the lifecycle rules, encoding, and compatibility requirements.

Update the stale comments that still use the old ReadOnly mode name.

Line 178 now transitions to AccountMode::Base. The unchanged comments on Line 176 ("Resolving to ReadOnly") and Line 183 ("ReadOnly → Delegated") still use the removed mode name. The transient variable name on Line 171 also refers to the removed Transient mode. Rename these to Base and Undelegating.

Update the OwnedAccount::mode rustdoc so it includes synchronization policy.

The comment says the mode is the "complete kind and access mode". AccountMode also contains DataFlow. Line 121 and AccountSharedData::mode already describe all three parts. This comment is now inconsistent with them.
