git clone --bare git@github.com:lib-cf/dotfiles.git "${HOME}/.dotfiles"

git --git-dir="${HOME}/.dotfiles" --work-tree="$HOME" config --local status.showUntrackedFiles no

Note

If the following checkout fails because tracked dotfiles already exist in $HOME, move or remove the conflicting files and try again.

git --git-dir="${HOME}/.dotfiles" --work-tree="$HOME" checkout

git --git-dir="${HOME}/.dotfiles" --work-tree="$HOME" update-index --skip-worktree README.md

rm README.md

brew bundle --global

Add to .zshrc

[[ -d "${HOME}/.dotfiles" ]] &&
  alias dotfiles='git --git-dir="${HOME}/.dotfiles" --work-tree="$HOME"'

Git status commands

Without untracked files

dotfiles status

With untracked files

dotfiles -c status.showUntrackedFiles=normal status
