Summary

  • A command sent while a modal dialog or another long operation blocks the Unity Editor main thread no longer waits silently. Once the main thread has stalled for 30 seconds and the command has not started running yet, it fails with MAIN_THREAD_BLOCKED, frees the command slot, and is safe to run again.

Closes #3411

User Impact

  • Before: the command took the command slot and waited for the main thread with nothing printed. uloop status already reported MainThreadBlocked and a second command got UNITY_SERVER_BUSY within seconds, but the waiting command itself only returned after the block cleared, or after the CLI's 5-minute limit if nobody dismissed the dialog.
  • After: the waiting command fails about 30 seconds into the stall with MAIN_THREAD_BLOCKED (exit code 1, Retryable and SafeToRetry true). The message gives the stall seconds, and NextActions say to check the Unity window for a dialog and run uloop status before trying again. Nothing from the tool ran, and the slot is already free.
  • Unchanged: a command whose own code blocks the main thread (for example an execute-dynamic-code snippet that sleeps) is not stopped. It keeps the stall notice from fix: Agents now see the Unity main-thread stall notice even when stderr is not a terminal #3416 and the 5-minute UNITY_EDITOR_UNRESPONSIVE limit.

Why 30 seconds

  • It matches the limits the CLI already uses for "busy but normal": the 30-second stall notice and compile's 30-second silent-wait warning. Scene saves, small imports, and entering Play Mode stay under it; a dialog does not.
  • The first check comes one poll (1 second) after the wait starts, so an idle Editor whose loop was only asleep is woken by the request and ticks before anything is judged.
  • ADR 0020 records the options considered (5 / 15 / 60 seconds, giving up on the CLI side) and when to revisit.

Changes

  • Unity: a watchdog polls the main-thread stall once a second while a request waits for its first main-thread switch. At 30 seconds it cancels the lease through the same path as uloop cancel, and the request fails with a new main_thread_blocked error carrying the tool name and stall seconds. Busy, cancel, and blocked outcomes are not written to the Console.
  • The lease keeps an entry state that the watchdog, uloop cancel, and tool entry all move with a compare-and-swap from "waiting". The service decides by that state rather than by the token, so a tool that has entered is never reported as blocked, and a lease claimed by the watchdog never runs its tool even if the main thread resumes before the token is cancelled.
  • Requests that uloop cancel may not stop (a compile with a domain reload, run-tests that respects the Enter Play Mode settings) are covered too, since no tool code has run.
  • When an execute-dynamic-code snippet blocks the main thread for 30 seconds or more, a second execute-dynamic-code waiting behind it in the shared slot now fails with MAIN_THREAD_BLOCKED instead of running after the first finishes.
  • CLI: main_thread_blocked maps to MAIN_THREAD_BLOCKED with StallSeconds and RunningToolName in Details. The status skill, the cancel reference, and the new ADR document the behavior. Shared release input stamps are refreshed.
  • The dead-code gate's public candidate ceiling goes from 38 to 39. The new error data's type override is the wire discriminator, in the documented "type on the JsonRpcErrorData subclasses" group.
  • Protocol version is unchanged: the new error type is additive, and older CLIs show it as UNITY_RPC_ERROR.

Verification

  • EditMode, run by class regex: ToolExecutionSessionTests, MainThreadEntryWatchdogTests, and UnityCliLoopToolExecutionServiceTests 71/71 passed; JsonRpcResponseFactoryWireShapeCharacterizationTests and OnionAssemblyDependencyTests 93/93 passed.
  • Mutations, each reverted afterwards:
    • Ignoring the tool-entry claim fails the "watchdog claims before the main thread resumes" test.
    • Observing before the first poll fails the two GuardAsync tests.
    • Dropping the blocked check from the user-cancel reason fails two lease tests.
    • Replacing the claim's compare-and-swap with an unconditional write fails two lease tests and the "main thread resumes while the watchdog is deciding" test.
  • Go: go test ./errors/... passes, including three new classification tests. gofmt, go vet, and golangci-lint are clean in all four modules, and scripts/check-code-complexity.sh exits 0. go test ./... passes except tests that bind Unix sockets or create directories under /tmp, which the local sandbox denies.
  • check-asmdef-policy, check-skill-size, and sync-tool-docs.sh --check all exit 0.
  • Live check on Unity 2022.3, reproducing the report (a 60-second Thread.Sleep scheduled on EditorApplication.update):
    • uloop status after 11 s: MainThreadBlocked, 7.2 s.
    • uloop get-hierarchy right after: exit 1, MAIN_THREAD_BLOCKED, StallSeconds 30.35, returned after 23 s, with no stall notice line on stderr.
    • uloop status right after: still MainThreadBlocked, with no RunningToolName, so the slot was released.
    • After the block ended: Ready, and get-hierarchy succeeds.
    • execute-dynamic-code sleeping 40 s inside its own code succeeded after 40 s and printed one "busy executing this command for 40s; still waiting..." line on stderr (stderr redirected to a file).
    • No MAIN_THREAD_BLOCKED entry in the Console errors.

…CKED

A command sent while a modal dialog or a long operation held the Editor
main thread took the command slot and waited silently for the thread to
resume, up to the CLI's 5-minute limit, even though status and BUSY
already reported the stall within seconds.

A watchdog now polls the main-thread stall once a second while a request
waits for its first main-thread switch. At 30 seconds it cancels the
lease through the same path as uloop cancel and the request fails with
main_thread_blocked, carrying the tool name and stall seconds; no tool
code has run, so retrying is safe. The first check waits one poll so an
idle Editor whose loop was only asleep is not judged.

The lease keeps an entry state that the watchdog, uloop cancel, and the
tool entry all move with a CAS from Waiting, and the service decides by
that state rather than by the token: a claimer can win before it has
cancelled the token, and the main thread may resume the switch in that
window. A tool that has entered is never stopped by the watchdog.
Unity now answers a command that stopped waiting for a blocked main
thread with a main_thread_blocked error. Without a matching case the CLI
showed it as a generic UNITY_RPC_ERROR, hiding that nothing ran and that
running the command again is safe.

The CLI maps the type to MAIN_THREAD_BLOCKED (retryable, safe to retry)
with the stall seconds and tool name in Details, and points to the
dialog check and uloop status instead of a retry loop. The status skill
and the cancel reference say when the fail-fast applies, and ADR 0020
records the 30-second threshold and what it does not cover.

Walkthrough

Commands that wait to enter tool code now fail when the Editor main thread has stalled for 30 seconds. The change adds lease-state handling, returns a typed JSON-RPC error, and classifies it in the CLI as safe to retry. Documentation distinguishes this case from stalls caused by running tool code.

Changes: Blocked Main Thread Command Handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Watchdog and tool-entry lease
Packages/src/Editor/Application/*, Packages/src/Editor/Domain/ToolExecutionSession.cs, Packages/src/Editor/CompositionRoot/UnityCliLoopApplicationRegistration.cs, Packages/src/Editor/Infrastructure/Threading/*, Assets/Tests/Editor/MainThreadEntryWatchdogTests.cs, Assets/Tests/Editor/ToolExecutionSessionTests.cs, Assets/Tests/Editor/UnityCliLoopToolExecutionServiceTests.cs
The execution service starts a watchdog while a request waits for its first main-thread switch. The watchdog polls once per second and can cancel a waiting lease at 30 seconds. Lease state ensures that tool entry, user cancellation, and blocked-main-thread cancellation do not overwrite each other. Tests cover threshold behavior, races, and slot release.
Blocked-main-thread error propagation

The Editor returns main_thread_blocked error data with the tool name and stall duration. The CLI classifies the error as MAIN_THREAD_BLOCKED, marks it safe to retry, and supplies recovery guidance. Tests cover serialization, classification, and missing payload fields.
Command and cancellation guidance
.agents/skills/uloop-status/*, .claude/skills/uloop-status/*, Packages/src/Editor/CliOnlyTools~/Status/Skill/*, docs/adr/0020-blocked-main-thread-fails-the-waiting-command.md
The status guidance describes the 30-second waiting-command failure and the existing five-minute timeout for a stall caused by running tool code. Cancellation guidance states that MAIN_THREAD_BLOCKED means the command did not run and the slot is free.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #3411 has one direct linked target. Its coding requirements are: (1) a command that waits while the Editor main thread is blocked fails after a threshold instead of waiting silently; (2) the error reports the blocked duration; (3) the error gives guidance comparable to the existing status and busy messages.

Requirement (1) [#3411]: MainThreadEntryWatchdog polls the main-thread stall once per second. At 30 seconds it cancels the lease. UnityCliLoopToolExecutionService runs the watchdog until the first main-thread switch. ToolExecutionLease in ToolExecutionSession.cs uses compare-and-swap entry states, so a tool that has entered is not reported as blocked. The slot is released without running the tool.

Requirement (2) [#3411]: UnityCliLoopMainThreadBlockedException carries the tool name and stall seconds. MainThreadBlockedErrorData sends stallSeconds and runningToolName on the wire. The CLI mainThreadBlockedError puts StallSeconds and RunningToolName in Details and states the stall duration in the message.

Requirement (3) [#3411]: The CLI sets MAIN_THREAD_BLOCKED as retryable and safe to retry. Its recovery actions say to check the Unity window for a dialog and run uloop status. The issue also mentions restarting only if the block persists. That wording is an example in the issue, and the PR does not include it. This gap is not a concrete unmet requirement.

Tests: the summary lists EditMode tests for the watchdog, the lease, the service, and the wire shape. It also lists Go classification tests in error_envelope_test.go. I did not run them. I relied on the test file summaries and the reported results.

The PR does not change the behavior for code that blocks the main thread after tool entry. The issue does not require that change. The PR states that behavior explicitly.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Each changed area connects to #3411 or supports it:

  • Unity runtime: the watchdog, the lease state changes, the execution service, the registration wiring, the blocked exception, the error data type, the response factory, log suppression for the new exception, the liveness port, and the error-type constant. These implement the fail-fast behavior.
  • Unity tests: EditMode tests for the watchdog, the lease, the service, and the wire shape. These test the new behavior.
  • CLI: main_thread_blocked classification, error data decoding, the MAIN_THREAD_BLOCKED code, and Go tests. These expose the new error to the user.
  • Documentation: the status skill notes, the cancel reference notes, and ADR 0020. The skill and reference notes describe the new user-visible behavior. The ADR records the threshold decision. The issue asks for guidance, so these changes are within scope.
  • Maintenance: the shared-inputs stamp refresh and the dead-code public candidate ceiling change from 38 to 39. Both follow from the new public types. The PR description gives this reason.

I did not inspect the stamp files or the workflow file directly. The summary establishes that they hold only the hash value and the ceiling number. I found no unrelated product change in the summary.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 42.11% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 19 functions across 23 files. (3 skipped: 3 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

MainThreadBlockedErrorData.type is the wire discriminator the CLI reads as
error.data.type, like the type override on every other JsonRpcErrorData
subclass, so it stays a PublicCandidate under the documented group.

Assert.ThrowsAsync waits on the task, so a regression that leaves a
blocked or cancelled request pending would freeze the Editor instead of
failing the test. Each test now asserts the task is faulted first.

Claim the entry lease before stopping the watchdog.

When the watchdog has passed its stop check, the main-thread switch can return and call watchdogStop.Cancel(). The watchdog can then claim the still-Waiting lease before MarkToolEntered() runs. The request fails with UnityCliLoopMainThreadBlockedException even though the main-thread switch returned.

Move MarkToolEntered() into the try block before watchdogStop.Cancel():

When a blocked execute-dynamic-code request shares the session with another active request, MAIN_THREAD_BLOCKED releases only the failed request's lease. uloop status can still report Busy. Update the guidance:
