Unlisted

The realtime speech-to-text pages are unlisted. Anyone with a link can open them, but nothing on the site leads to them:

  • All four pages set hidden: true and noindex: true in their frontmatter. Mintlify leaves hidden pages out of the sidebar, site search, the sitemap, search engine indexing, the AI assistant and llms.txt. docs.json has no seo.indexing: "all" override, so this holds.
  • No listed page links to them. docs.json, llms.txt, features/speech-to-text.mdx, features/realtime-streaming.mdx, voice-agent-loop.mdx and overview/capabilities.mdx are identical to main. The four pages still link to each other.
  • The AsyncAPI definition is in its own file, api-reference/asyncapi-asr-realtime.yml, and only the hidden reference page uses it. The shared api-reference/asyncapi.yml is identical to main.

Direct links (after merge):

To list them later: remove hidden/noindex, add the navigation entries and restore the cross-links. b1d128a has the cross-links and the navigation that the unlisting commit reverted.

Summary

This PR documents realtime speech to text: the wss://api.fish.audio/v1/asr/realtime WebSocket endpoint with the transcribe-1-pro-realtime model, protocol v1. It is in production as of 2026-10-14.

What the feature is. You stream live 16-bit PCM over a WebSocket and get the transcript back turn by turn. Each turn has optional live drafts and ends with one committed final transcript. In the default auto mode, the server's turn detection works in four ways:

  • It decides when the user has finished, from what was said and how. There is an optional early eager_end_of_turn signal.
  • When the client sends agent_speaking, it tells a backchannel ("mm-hm", "嗯") from a real interruption (user_backchannel vs user_turn_taken).
  • It usually marks background noise, TV and side conversations as non-user turns (user_turn: false).
  • It lets people pause to think.

Transcription uses the conversation as context: custom terms, the agent's own lines via context_add, session history and prior history at config. Turn detection is trained on English, Chinese and Japanese. Transcription and per-message language identification cover more languages (29 codes).

Pages

New:

  • features/speech-to-text/realtime.mdx: the feature overview. It covers Smart Turn Detection, History Aware Transcription, modes, languages, measured latency ("about"), audio, keys and limits.
  • api-reference/endpoint/websocket/asr-realtime.mdx + api-reference/asyncapi-asr-realtime.yml (a standalone AsyncAPI 3.0 document with the asrRealtime channel): the full v1 reference. It lists every client and server message, the config fields and defaults, the silence_timeout_ms table, the turn-end reasons, guarantees, language list, degraded commits, errors and close codes, limits, a worked example and the compatibility rules.
  • developer-guide/sdk-guide/cookbook/realtime-transcription.mdx: a quickstart. It has a Python and a Node.js client that stream a WAV file, plus a browser microphone page with a small server relay, so the key stays server-side.
  • developer-guide/sdk-guide/cookbook/realtime-voice-agent.mdx: a voice-agent guide and recipe. It covers when to answer, eager replies, agent_speaking, barge-in/ducking/backchannels, context, audio capture tips and languages.

Updated:

  • tests/cookbooks/specs.py, tests/js/specs.mjs (+ test dependencies): specs for the new recipes. These are not published pages.

No listed page, docs.json, llms.txt or api-reference/asyncapi.yml changes (see Unlisted).

Verification

  • Accuracy review: every field, default, range, error, close code, limit and behaviour statement was checked against the v1 contract. The review findings are fixed in 2db4a6f:
    • recoverable vs server_restarting
    • "safety net" wording
    • language_code presence
    • μ-law/A-law decoding for phone audio
    • configure keeps omitted fields (AsyncAPI update schemas without defaults); context.history is ignored in configure
    • draft_interval_ms minimum
    • diarize string values
    • agent_speaking wording
  • Live runs: the published code was extracted verbatim from the pages and run against production on synthetic speech:
    • Python quickstart: 3 turns, session_done, close 1000.
    • Node.js quickstart: same events, exit 0.
    • Python voice-agent recipe: agent_speaking: true at committed, context_add, duck on speech_start, unduck on user_backchannel, stop + agent_speaking: false on user_turn_taken, false before audio_done, close 1000.
  • Live probes (no audio) confirmed:
    • unsupported sample rate → unsupported_audio + 4400
    • defaults echoed in session_started
    • non-boolean agent_speaking → recoverable invalid_request
    • audio_done without audio → session_done + 1000
    • draft_interval_ms: 100 accepted (counts as 250)
    • diarize: "false" accepted
    • configure keeps omitted fields
  • Public safety: a grep of the full diff and the commit messages found no internal model, vendor or component names, no hostnames, no competitor names, no pricing and no infrastructure facts. The sample output uses placeholder session and request IDs.
  • Build:
    • mint broken-links reports the same 25 pre-existing hits as main (in .mintlify/skills and temp/).
    • Every internal link and anchor in the changed pages resolves.
    • All changed pages return 200 in mint dev.
    • Prettier 3.6.2 passes on the new docs files and the new AsyncAPI file. tests/js/specs.mjs already fails Prettier on main.
    • The YAML parses. @asyncapi/parser 3 validates asyncapi-asr-realtime.yml (1 channel, 22 messages, 2 operations) and the restored asyncapi.yml with no errors or warnings.
  • Unlisting (mint dev, 0f4b2f9):
    • The four hidden pages return 200 and carry <meta name="robots" content="noindex"/>. Listed pages do not.
    • The reference page renders all 22 AsyncAPI messages from the new file. The TTS live page still renders its messages from asyncapi.yml.
    • The HTML of /features/speech-to-text and /api-reference/endpoint/websocket/tts-live, sidebar included, does not mention any hidden page.
    • The llms.txt served locally is the repo file, identical to main.
    • Site search and the sitemap are not available in mint dev (local search goes to the hosted index), so check those on the deployed preview.

Open questions

  1. Access wording. The pages say realtime STT "is in preview and is enabled per team. Contact support@fish.audio to turn it on for your team. Until then, connecting returns 403." This copies the convention in agents/telephony/keypad.mdx. Please confirm the "preview" label, the support address and the enablement process.
  2. Pricing. No price is published on these pages. Confirm whether and where realtime pricing should appear (pricing page / models overview). That is out of scope here.
  3. Production vs contract.
    • Unreadable first message: the contract says it gets invalid_request (close 4400). Production answers invalid_config (close 4400), and the message includes a parser-internal detail. The docs say only that a non-readable first config gets an error with recoverable: false and close 4400, and that message is for humans. The server or the contract should be aligned, and the message should probably be made generic.
    • context.history in configure: production accepts it with ok: true and silently ignores it. The docs now say that.
  4. agent_speaking during a slow LLM. The guide says that if the first audio is more than about 2 s away (slow LLM, tool call), the wait should be treated as a pause and false sent. This extends the contract's pause rule; please confirm with the protocol owner.
  5. Reference page length. The hand-written body (~520 lines) repeats what the generated AsyncAPI "Messages" section shows. I kept it because it carries the turn semantics, the guarantees and the error table. It could be trimmed toward the sibling TTS live pages if preferred.
  6. Link to compatible APIs. The hidden pages link to /developer-guide/compat/capabilities to say that the compatible APIs' realtime endpoints use manual commit and have no turn detection. That existing page names other vendors' APIs. Product may prefer not to send realtime readers there.
  7. Tests. The new specs need a key whose team has realtime enabled. The Python cases skip on 403; the JS runner has no skip mechanism, so it fails on a key without access. Neither suite runs in CI today.
  8. SDK wording. "The SDKs do not wrap this endpoint" (the "yet" was dropped). Update it if SDK support is planned.
  9. Merge. Please squash-merge: the first commit links pages that arrive in the second, so the history is not bisect-clean.

liujiahua123123 and others added 5 commits October 15, 2026 13:46
Documents wss://api.fish.audio/v1/asr/realtime (transcribe-1-pro-realtime,
protocol v1): handshake and refusals, framing, session flow, every client
and server message with fields and defaults, turn detection modes and
silence_timeout_ms, guarantees, reasons, speakers, language, errors, close
codes and limits.

Adds an asrRealtime channel to asyncapi.yml with every message schema, and
generalizes the AsyncAPI title from TTS-only. Lists the page under
API Reference > ASR (v1).

- features/speech-to-text/realtime: what transcribe-1-pro-realtime does,
Smart Turn Detection (eager end of turn, backchannel detection,
background awareness, room to think), History Aware Transcription,
modes, languages, latency, and realtime vs file transcription.
- Cookbook "Transcribe a live audio stream in realtime": Python and Node.js
clients that stream a WAV file and print the events, plus a browser
microphone page with a server relay that keeps the API key server-side.
- Cookbook "Build a realtime voice agent": event timeline, the agent loop
  (eager replies, turn_resumed, agent_speaking, barge-in, backchannels),
context, audio capture tips and language coverage.

Speech to Text becomes a nav group (Overview + Realtime), like Text to
Speech. Every code sample was run against the production endpoint with
synthetic speech.

Adds a capabilities card, a pointer on the TTS-only Realtime Streaming
page, a tip after the voice-agent-loop recipe (after its code blocks, so
the test harness block indexes do not change), and llms.txt entries for
the new guide, cookbooks and WebSocket reference.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Review fixes:
- recoverable: server_restarting is recoverable but closes with 1012;
the first message, if not a readable config, closes with 4400.
- Pauses: short mid-sentence pauses usually do not end the turn; the
  safety net is silence_timeout_ms only.
- language_code is present only when the language can be identified.
- Telephony: decode mu-law or A-law to 16-bit PCM first.
- configure: omitted fields keep their values (separate AsyncAPI schemas
without defaults); context.history is ignored there.
- AsyncAPI: draft_interval_ms accepts values under 250, diarize accepts
the strings "true" and "false", fuller session_started example.
- Voice agent guide: agent_speaking wording follows the contract (long
LLM waits count as a pause), late stop signal over continuous noise.
- Sample output uses placeholder session and request IDs.
- Capabilities: realtime moves out of the core features grid (API-only
  preview); distinct icon; "team" for concurrency; US spelling;
  "Audio format" heading so the audio message keeps its anchor;
JavaScript tab label matches the other code groups.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Adds specs that run the published Python quickstart and voice-agent
recipe, and the Node.js quickstart, on the fixture clip. The Python
cases skip on HTTP 403, since the endpoint is enabled per team.

This change adds hidden preview documentation for realtime speech-to-text and does not change runtime code. One documentation gap may remain open. The error contract may not state which error types produce close code 1009 and which produce 4413. That could confuse clients that handle errors by close code. The change is mergeable once a maintainer confirms that mapping.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Add 1009 handling or a matching code to the error contract.

The description at Line 1528 lists close code 1009 for nonrecoverable errors. The error_type enum has frame_too_large, but the code enum allows only 413 for that case. The close-code list also has no mapping from error_type to close code. A client that switches on close code cannot tell which error_type produces 1009 and which produces 4413. Document the mapping, for example frame_too_large → 4413 or 1009. Also state when each close code applies.

Realtime speech to text is in preview, so its pages should be reachable
only by people who have the link.

- The four pages (features/speech-to-text/realtime, the asr-realtime
WebSocket reference, and the realtime-transcription and
  realtime-voice-agent cookbooks) set `hidden: true` and `noindex: true`.
Mintlify then leaves them out of the navigation, site search, the
sitemap, search engine indexing, the AI assistant and llms.txt. They
  still link to each other.
- Revert this branch's edits to listed pages so nothing points at them:
  docs.json navigation, llms.txt, features/speech-to-text,
  features/realtime-streaming, the voice-agent-loop cookbook and
overview/capabilities are identical to main again.
- Move the realtime ASR AsyncAPI definition out of the shared
api-reference/asyncapi.yml (restored to main) into its own document,
api-reference/asyncapi-asr-realtime.yml, referenced only by the hidden
  reference page.
