Commit cards help people see at a glance whether a post came from the website, a mobile app, the macOS desktop app, or the CLI. The source is assigned from the authenticated device or submission route, not supplied per commit; other API clients appear as App. Older posts without a stored source remain unlabeled.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Commit cards identify the posting source when available, including the website, iOS, Android, macOS, terminal, or “App” for an unrecognized app.
    • Source information is included in account data exports, including organization commits.
  • Privacy
    • Source information is cleared from posts retained as tombstones after account deletion.
  • Notes
    • Older posts and posts scheduled before source tracking may not show a source label.

Explain Change →

Walkthrough

Commits and scheduled commits now store a source for web, CLI, and API submissions. API sources come from the authenticated device’s app ID. Responses, exports, and commit cards expose source values. Account deletion clears source values from affected commits.

Changes: Commit source attribution and display

Layer / File(s) Summary
Source contract and persistence
app/Enums/CommitSource.php, database/migrations/*, app/Models/Commit.php, app/Models/ScheduledCommit.php, app/Actions/CreateCommit.php, app/Actions/CreateScheduledCommit.php, app/Queries/CommitBuilder.php
A CommitSource enum defines six source values. Nullable source fields are added to commits and scheduled commits. Creation actions store the supplied source.
Request attribution and scheduled submission
app/Http/Middleware/AuthenticateSignedRequest.php, app/Http/Controllers/Api/*, app/Http/Controllers/Cli/CommitController.php, app/Http/Controllers/CommitController.php, app/Http/Controllers/CommitReplyController.php, app/Http/Controllers/ScheduledCommitController.php, app/Actions/UpdateScheduledCommitSubmittedAt.php, tests/Feature/CommitSourceTest.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/Cli/CommitControllerTest.php
Web and CLI routes assign source values. API routes derive the source from the authenticated device’s app ID. Scheduled submission passes its source to the created commit.
Commit responses, exports, and cards
app/Http/Resources/CommitResource.php, resources/js/types/commit.ts, resources/js/components/commit-card.tsx, app/Actions/CreateExport.php, tests/Feature/Controllers/ExportControllerTest.php, tests/Feature/OrganizationCommitsTest.php, tests/Unit/Models/CommitTest.php, KNOWLEDGE_BASE.md
Commit responses include non-null source values. Exports include source values and use schema version 9. Commit cards show a source label when one is present.
Source clearing during account deletion
app/Actions/DeleteUser.php, tests/Unit/Actions/DeleteUserTest.php
Account deletion clears source values from user commits and organization-owned commits attributed to the user.

  • dev-null-sh/dev-null.sh#1258 — The issue requests source labels beside commit timestamps; this change records and displays source labels.

Merge Risk: Low · up to ce1df

Exports omit the source of pending scheduled commits. This is a bounded limitation that can be followed up after merge.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to ce1df

The change exposes a coarse posting-surface label rather than a device identifier. Existing authentication and visibility controls remain in place, and account deletion clears the new metadata from retained posts. App-platform labels reflect a client-declared platform, not verified client identity. Production deployment and concurrent deletion behavior were not validated at runtime.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The new disclosure is a six-value posting-surface enum attached to visible posts, not the underlying device identifier, app_id, or public key. Public response serialization includes the label after the existing commit-visibility check; organization exports remain filtered by the submitting user's identity.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — An approved client can influence its platform label through the app_id declared during device authorization: validation checks format, while source mapping recognizes the platform prefix. This does not establish verified client identity. The displayed labels name platforms, not an official application, and no authorization use of commit source was identified in the inspected consumers.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new authenticated_device attribute is assigned after signature verification, device validation, and the banned-user check. The existing Device-class request attribute and authenticated user assignment remain. The commit-store route stays within signed-request authentication; the PR adds a metadata consumer without changing those identity controls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The stored source does not add an independent failure or recovery step to scheduled delivery: the claim, commit insertion, and receipt update share a transaction. Existing tests describe repetition, competing claims, cancellation, and rollback scenarios, but were not executed; in-flight account-deletion races remain a source-level assessment rather than a runtime guarantee.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Keep posting-source labels informational. Any future verified-client badge or authorization decision should require separate identity proof rather than inheriting trust from the self-declared app_id prefix.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 69.23% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 13 functions across 26 files. That's not a meaningful information to display. It can stored for analytics or moderation purposes, but it should not be exposed.

I noticed that #1322 by @curlysanders (opened Oct 30, closes #1258) adds the same thing: an App\Enums\CommitSource enum and a nullable source column on commits and scheduled_commits, set from the same create paths. Only one of the two can land as is.

The approaches differ:

  • feat: add commit source badges #1322 takes the source from an X-Devnull-Client header or the User-Agent (devnull-tui/…, DevNull-Mac/…), on each request, and shows badges in more places (replies, quotes, search, scheduled commits)
  • this PR derives it from the app_id of the approved device, and clears it on tombstones when an account is deleted. CommitSource::fromAppId() maps ios, android and macos; other app ids, like a TUI's, would show as api

Like @GromNaN, I'm not sure displaying the source adds much. Storing it without showing it would need a reason under the data guidelines, which rule out analytics alone and ask each new column why it's needed, who sees it and when it's deleted.

@mnapoli, from the product metrics side: would knowing which client a commit came from serve anything on the Growth page (activation or retention by client, for instance)? That would help decide whether this data is worth keeping at all, for both PRs.
