Summary

A key added on GitHub after sign-in stayed invisible to devnull commit until the next sync. #1444 already points the lookup 404 at Sync from GitHub on the profile, and that button still refreshes the keys right away. This PR adds the automatic path: a real signed-in page visit queues the existing key sync.

The lookup still only reads keys already stored. It does not call GitHub.

Changes

  • Web middleware queues SyncGitHubSshKeysJob after a successful page visit. Prefetches, Inertia partials (including except-only), JSON polling, failed responses, stars and other actions, and api/cli/* do not queue one.
  • A visit skips the queue when a sync just finished. Otherwise only the first visit in an hour queues one. Each sync spends three GitHub requests on the shared hourly quota, so an active tab no longer asks about every five minutes.
  • The 404 message stays the one from fix: point the CLI to Sync from GitHub when none of your SSH keys are known yet #1444: click Sync from GitHub on the profile. That covers a key added and used before the next visit, or inside the hour.

Validation

  • vendor/bin/pint --dirty — passed.
  • Feature tests for the sync and the key lookup were not run here. Postgres on 127.0.0.1:5432 refused the connection, and Docker Desktop would not start.

Limitations

The automatic sync runs on the next real page visit, then on the queue, at most once an hour. Someone who never reloads the site still has the old keys until they do, or until they click Sync from GitHub.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • GitHub SSH keys now refresh automatically after a successful page visit while you’re signed in, at most once per hour.
    • Select Sync from GitHub in Profile settings to refresh your keys immediately.
    • Background key refreshes won’t prevent a page from loading if the refresh cannot be queued.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 513bf

Signed-in page visits now queue a GitHub SSH-key refresh at most once an hour, and failures do not break the page. No merge-blocking risk is identified in this change.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 61855

Automatic refresh preserves the signed-in account boundary. However, a background refresh can overlap a newer manual refresh and temporarily restore removed keys. Failed queue submission can also suppress automatic recovery for up to an hour. Existing signature verification and short-lived freshness checks limit the security impact.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new recurring background refresh can overlap explicit refreshes without snapshot ordering. An automatic job that fetched a key before its removal can commit after a newer manual refresh removed it, restoring the fingerprint and marking that older state fresh for five minutes. Transactions prevent partial replacement, but not stale replacement. This overlap was already possible through existing callers; the PR extends it to ordinary signed-in visits. Exploitation requires possession of the removed private key and the relevant timing window.
  • Low · reliability · observed: The hourly queued marker is stored before dispatch and is not cleared when submission fails or the job exhausts its retries. A transient failure can therefore leave no recoverable automatic work while later visits remain suppressed until expiry. This strands the new authentication-key discovery path, although manual refresh remains available and CLI revocation checks do not consult this marker.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A visit selects only the signed-in user's GitHub account, not an arbitrary request-supplied target. The ordering concern affects that account's mirrored keys. Aggregate refresh traffic shares application credentials and can affect GitHub-dependent operations across users, but deployed quota exhaustion was not demonstrated.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The security-relevant ordering path requires an older automatic snapshot to commit after a newer removal refresh. A holder of the removed private key could then encounter a restored fingerprint during the renewed freshness window. No direct guest-triggered GitHub synchronization, arbitrary account targeting, or signature-verification bypass was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new path derives identity from request authentication and resolves GitHub by stored account ID before using the returned login. CLI authentication still checks freshness and nonce state, refreshes the stored owner unless recently synchronized, and rechecks fingerprint ownership. The hourly dispatch marker is not an authorization control.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — A failed synchronization does not create a new completion marker. CLI refresh and explicit profile refresh remain independent of the hourly queued marker, limiting the reservation-recovery defect to the automatic path rather than disabling revocation enforcement.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Coordinate snapshot acquisition and replacement across all refresh callers, using serialization or an ordering mechanism that prevents older results from replacing newer ones. Give dispatch reservations an explicit recovery lifecycle, separate from the intended hourly refresh budget.
  • proposed — Validate the aggregate refresh budget and queue/cache sharing in production. If existing operational controls do not cover the additional automatic traffic, introduce a shared provider budget that preserves capacity for authentication-sensitive refreshes.

Reproduced this in production on Oct 28: I uploaded a new ed25519 signing key on github.com and kept getting "None of your SSH keys are on the GitHub account of a /dev/null user" from the commit script — the key-lookups call 404ed on every run, hours after the key was live on GitHub. Reading the server backed the report: the ssh keys table only refreshes on the web sign-in path, so a long-lived session never sees a later key.

The per-visit throttled sync plus the friendlier lookup error covers this well. The one flow outside its reach is adding a key and immediately committing with no signed-in visit in between — which the new error message handles by telling people to open the site first. Happy to run the real sequence (new key → CLI commit, no re-login) once this lands and report back.

A partial reload that only names props to leave out, and a status poll that returns JSON without asking for it, were counted as page visits.

@tiagoabsantos, #1228 was closed on Nov 3 by #1444, which takes a different route: the key lookup's 404 now points to the Sync from GitHub button on the profile settings, and the sync stays manual (rate limited). The 404 message this PR changes is the one #1444 rewrote, so the two conflict there.

What this PR still adds is the automatic sync on signed-in visits. One thing to weigh there: each sync makes three GitHub calls (user/{id}, users/{login}/keys, users/{login}/ssh_signing_keys) on the OAuth app's shared 5,000/hour quota, and with the 5-minute freshness window an active user would trigger one about every 5 minutes, including POSTs like stars. That's up to ~36 calls an hour per active user, mostly for people who never use the CLI.

Tiago Santos added 2 commits November 6, 2026 09:20
Keep the Sync from GitHub lookup message from dev-null-sh#1444. The visit still queues a key sync.
A signed-in page load queued a GitHub sync about every five minutes, including stars, and each sync spends three requests on the shared quota. Only a real page visit queues one now, and the next one waits an hour. Sync from GitHub still refreshes the keys immediately.

Caught this up with production. The lookup 404 stays the #1444 text (click Sync from GitHub). That button is still the immediate refresh.

The visit sync no longer runs on stars or other actions, and a signed-in page queues at most one sync an hour instead of about every five minutes. A sync is still three GitHub requests (user/{id}, users/{login}/keys, users/{login}/ssh_signing_keys), so an active person now costs about three an hour, not ~36. Someone who adds a key and commits before that hour can still use the profile button, which the 404 already names.

Release the queued marker when dispatch fails

If the database queue cannot insert the job, the marker remains for up to an hour. Later eligible visits cannot queue a retry, so a newly added key can remain unavailable to key lookup. Release the marker when the job cannot be queued, while retaining the atomic reservation and error reporting.
