feat(mcp): point dhq mcp at the hosted MCP server - #65
dhq mcp now points at the hosted, read-only DeployHQ MCP server (https://mcp.deployhq.com/mcp) instead of launching the local npm deployhq-mcp-server.
dhq mcp: prints hosted setup. Guidance goes to stderr; stdout carries only data (the mcpServers JSON snippet, or the {url, claude_code, config} object with --json). Covers Claude Code (claude mcp add --transport http ...), Claude Desktop (Settings > Connectors, since remote servers there are account-level connectors, not JSON config) and Cursor-style mcpServers clients.
dhq mcp --local: the previous stdio launcher, unchanged.
Back-compat: existing client configs {"command":"dhq","args":["mcp"]} pipe stdin, so with no --json they still start the local server and get a deprecation warning on stderr. --local and an explicit --json take priority over the piped-stdin heuristic (decideMCPMode), so agents/CI that get a stdin pipe can still read the setup.
agent_metadata for dhq mcp now reports SupportsJSON / SafeForAutomation.
README, embedded skill reference and CHANGELOG.md ([Unreleased]) updated.
The hosted server is read-only as of 30 Oct 2026; use the CLI for anything that changes a deployment.
Review council
Run before opening this PR (Claude + Codex; Google/Antigravity did not run, see below). Both flagged and this PR addresses:
piped stdin overriding an explicit --json (agents/CI would launch the local server) -> decideMCPMode
"type": "http" JSON advertised for Claude Desktop -> separate Connectors instructions
stale agent metadata -> updated
guidance mixed into stdout -> moved to stderr
new output/dispatch paths untested -> table test + stdout/stderr routing tests
Not addressed: the legacy fallback has no removal date; Claude's note that dhq mcp --local rejects unknown flags matches the old behaviour, so left as is.
Test plan
go vet ./..., go test ./..., golangci-lint run ./... (0 issues)
Built binary prints setup in a terminal
Verify with a real legacy client config (command: dhq, args: [mcp]) that the local server still starts
Verify the hosted URL/sign-in flow in Claude Code and Claude Desktop
dhq mcp now provides setup instructions for the hosted MCP server by default, with a JSON configuration option.
Use --local to start the local stdio server. When input is piped, the command still starts the local server and displays a deprecation warning; use --json to show hosted setup information instead.
Documentation
Updated setup guidance to cover hosted and local server options, JSON output, and connecting Claude Desktop to remote servers.
`dhq mcp` now prints setup for the hosted, read-only DeployHQ MCP server
(https://mcp.deployhq.com/mcp): the `claude mcp add --transport http`
command, Claude Desktop connector steps, and an mcpServers JSON snippet
(`--json` returns the same). Guidance goes to stderr, data to stdout.
The local deployhq-mcp-server stdio launcher moves behind `--local`.
Existing client configs ({"command":"dhq","args":["mcp"]}) keep working:
with piped stdin and no --json, it still starts the local server and
warns on stderr that this is deprecated. --local and an explicit --json
take priority over the piped-stdin heuristic.
Agent metadata for `dhq mcp` now reports JSON support and automation
safety.

Walkthrough
dhq mcp now prints hosted-server setup by default, with text and JSON output. --local starts the stdio server. Piped stdin without explicit JSON retains the local-server path and emits a deprecation warning. The hosted configuration and command metadata are updated.

Mode selection and hosted setup internal/commands/mcp.go, internal/commands/mcp_test.go, internal/commands/agent_metadata.go, internal/commands/agent_metadata_test.go, CHANGELOG.md
The command selects hosted setup or local execution. Hosted setup supports text and JSON output, and MCPConfigSnippet() returns an HTTP configuration for the hosted endpoint. Metadata and tests reflect JSON support and automation safety.
Local stdio execution and compatibility internal/commands/mcp.go, README.md, skills/deployhq/references/auth-setup.md
The local server retains its installation, credential, and process handling. Documentation describes --local and the piped-stdin fallback with its deprecation warning.
Bare `dhq mcp` with piped stdin falls back to the blocking local stdio
server, so agents relying on safe_for_automation could hang unless they
know to pass --json. Keep SupportsJSON, drop SafeForAutomation.

WantsJSON() auto-switches on any non-TTY stdout, so `dhq mcp > mcp.json`
wrote the {url, claude_code, config} wrapper instead of a config a client
can read. Gate the wrapper on --json; redirected output stays the bare
mcpServers snippet.
