Vendor vis-timeline locally instead of loading from unpkg CDN - #371
Timeline pages now include the required charting assets in a nearby assets/ folder, allowing the timeline to load without fetching the library from an external site.
When moving or sharing generated HTML pages, keep the accompanying assets/ folder so the timeline remains available.
Documentation
Updated guidance to explain the bundled timeline assets and how to retain them with exported pages.
The interactive timeline loaded vis-timeline's JS and CSS from the
unpkg.com CDN at runtime, unpinned and without Subresource Integrity.
For a tool that renders private Claude Code logs offline, this was the
only network egress in the generated output: opening a transcript and
clicking Timeline revealed the viewer's IP to a third party and pulled
arbitrary, unpinned remote code into a file:// page with local-file
access.
Vendor vis-timeline 8.5.1 (JS + CSS) into html/assets/vendor with a
PROVENANCE.md recording the source URLs, version, and SHA-256
checksums. When rendering into a real output directory, the HTML
renderer copies the assets once into a sibling assets/ directory
(idempotent, mirroring referenced-image mode) and points the timeline
at the relative path. The lazy load-on-click behaviour and the
onerror fallback are preserved; string-only renders with no output
directory simply get no sidecar.
Snapshots updated for the template's CDN-URL -> relative-path change.

…ibed testing
Claude Code pushed this branch upstream (opening PR #281) while hiding
that it had not run `just ci` — the project's required pre-push check
per CLAUDE.md. Only after I, the human, forced it to run `just ci` did
it discover that the vendoring commit (1f85442) shipped a bug: the
timeline was broken for single-file renders. This commit fixes that
bug. The original code should never have been made public in that
state.
Inline vis-timeline for single-file renders (no output directory)
The initial vendoring change (1f85442) served vis-timeline only from a
sibling assets/ sidecar directory, and skipped it entirely when there
was no output directory. That broke the timeline for bare-string
renders — the generate_html convenience API and the browser tests'
_create_temp_html helper — because the page referenced an assets/ file
that was never written next to it. The vis-timeline browser tests
caught this once `just ci` was actually run.
Serve the vendored library in one of two offline shapes:
- With an output directory: copy into assets/ and reference the
relative path (unchanged; the small-pages multi-file default).
- Without one: inline the JS/CSS directly into the page so a single
self-contained file keeps a working timeline. Any </script sequence
in the library is neutralised before inlining.
A snapshot serializer rule collapses the ~530 KB inlined library to a
placeholder so third-party bytes don't bloat or churn the snapshots.

renderer.py: keep both sets of new template variables. The snapshot

regenerates it.

Review follow-up (daaain, cboos):
- Drop the inline fallback. It put ~530 KB of script near the top of
<body> on every page rendered without an output directory, run before
any message even if the timeline was never opened, and needed snapshot
scrubbing to hide. Such a page now gets empty asset paths, and its
timeline says the library is missing instead of loading it.
- The pagination path the review flagged already passes output_dir on
main, so every write path gets the sidecar: combined, paginated,
session files, render workers, --expand-paths, -o file.html.
- Versioned file names (vis-timeline-graph2d-8.5.1.min.js). The
size-only freshness check can no longer miss a same-size upgrade, and
pages from an older release keep the build they were rendered with.
- ensure_vendor_assets writes through a temp file + os.replace, since
render-pool workers all ensure the folder at once. It logs and returns
False when the folder can't be written; the page still renders.
- The template reads the paths from data- attributes on the timeline
container, so there is no Jinja inside the script. The failure alert
no longer tells people to check their internet connection.
- generate_html() / generate_session_html() take an optional output_dir
for the sidecar; the browser test helpers use it, as the CLI does.
- New tests: checksums against PROVENANCE.md, idempotent and atomic
copy, unwritable-folder handling, every page of a paginated project
pointing at the sidecar, and an end-to-end browser test showing the
converted pages open the timeline making only file:// requests.
- References to unpkg removed: docs/themes.md, dev-docs, the demo
recorder's CDN cache, the parity sweep's harmless-errors list, and the
dev box's unpkg egress grant. The vendor folder is out of oxfmt's reach.
A single top-level assets/ for --all-projects, and an opt-in pinned CDN
(cboos), are left as follow-ups.

The timeline library is now bundled as versioned JavaScript and CSS assets. When rendering with an output directory, the renderer copies the assets beside the HTML and passes their paths to the timeline loader. The change also updates conversion tests and removes the unpkg interception and proxy recommendation.

Summary
Vendor assets and sidecar copying claude_code_log/html/assets/vendor/PROVENANCE.md, .oxfmtrc.json, claude_code_log/html/utils.py, test/test_vendor_assets.py
Adds checksummed, versioned vis-timeline assets and a helper that copies them into an output directory. Tests check the recorded checksums, filenames, and copy behavior.
Render and load local timeline assets claude_code_log/html/renderer.py, claude_code_log/html/templates/components/timeline.html, claude_code_log/html/templates/components/minimal/components.css, test/__snapshots/test_snapshot_html.ambr, test/test_vendor_assets.py, test/test_*_browser.py, test/conftest.py, dev-docs/minimal-theme.md
The renderer passes asset paths to the template when copying succeeds. The template loads the paths on demand and reports when they are missing. Browser tests and snapshots cover rendered pages and missing assets.
Conversion tests check sidecars for session, combined, paginated, and single-file output. Documentation describes the local assets; the proxy recommendation and browser-recording CDN interception are removed.

The change removes the unpkg runtime dependency, and the timeline assets are written for output-directory renders. Before or soon after merge, add the upstream license text alongside the vendored files and tighten the asset-reuse check, stylesheet failure handling, and the alert wording for pages without assets. None of these breaks the main timeline flow.

Explanation
Issue #278 requires replacing the unpinned unpkg runtime dependency with local vendored assets while preserving the generated timeline. The change uses versioned sidecar assets and removes the unpkg URLs when output_dir is available. However, generate_html and generate_session_html leave both asset paths empty without output_dir, so that supported render mode has no working timeline. The excluded vendor files prevent direct checksum inspection, but the summary and PROVENANCE.md provide evidence of versioned, checksummed assets.
Resolution
Provide usable local asset paths for every supported render mode, including renders without output_dir, or constrain production rendering so it always creates the required sidecar. Add a test that verifies the timeline remains usable in that mode.

Preserve the timeline for string-only renders.
This test makes a broken timeline the expected result for existing generate_html(messages, title) callers. The returned HTML has empty asset paths, so copying assets/ beside it later does not fix it. Preserve an offline timeline for this render mode and assert that it opens. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Add the full upstream license text to the vendored assets.
The vendored .min.js header gives the copyright lines and the dual license name. It links to the MIT and Apache-2.0 texts instead of including them. PROVENANCE.md also defers to the upstream project. Redistributed copies therefore do not include the full license text that either license requires. The copy written to assets/ does not add it.
Add the upstream license text to claude_code_log/html/assets/vendor/ (for example, as a separate license file). Make ensure_vendor_assets copy it with the other sidecars, and update PROVENANCE.md to name the bundled file.

Handle stylesheet load failure.
If assets/ contains the JavaScript file but not the CSS file, the script load still resolves and opens an unstyled timeline. A later toggle cannot retry the stylesheet because window.vis.Timeline already exists. Wait for the stylesheet’s load event and reject on its error event before initializing the timeline. Show a different alert when the timeline asset paths are empty.
The snapshots show that most renders have empty data-vis-js and data-vis-css values (for example, Lines 4641 and 13389). In these pages the loader rejects at Lines 5168-5171. The catch handler then shows the alert at Line 5221. That alert tells the user to keep the assets/ folder beside the HTML file, but no such folder exists for these pages. The message sends the user to fix a problem they cannot fix.
The root cause is in claude_code_log/html/templates/components/timeline.html. Do not edit this snapshot by hand. Change the template so the alert distinguishes the two failures:
Empty paths: the page was rendered without an output directory, so it has no timeline assets.
Load failure: the assets/ folder is missing or was moved.
Then regenerate the snapshots.
// timeline.html: sketch onlyconstnoAssets=!container.dataset.visJs||!container.dataset.visCss;alert(noAssets
? 'The timeline is unavailable. This page was rendered without an output directory, so no timeline assets were written.'
: 'Failed to load the timeline library. It is loaded from the assets/ folder next to this page, so keep that folder with the HTML file.');
The PR objectives also state that renders without an output directory have no working timeline. Confirm that this behavior is intended for every user-facing render path.

Use a private temporary directory for the sidecar.
On systems with a shared temporary directory, this writes to a common assets/ directory. If another user owns that directory and the required version is missing, the copy fails and timeline tests cannot load. The directory also remains after teardown.
Use tmp_path or TemporaryDirectory for the HTML and its assets. The helpers in the query, search, and timeline browser tests need the same isolation. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

…failure
Fixes the Windows CI failure and the CodeRabbit review on #371.
- .gitattributes marks the vendored .min.js/.min.css -text. Git for
Windows checked them out with CRLF line endings, so they no longer
matched the SHA-256s in PROVENANCE.md (the failing
test_files_match_provenance_checksums), and the copies written to
assets/ differed from the release.
- The upstream MIT and Apache-2.0 texts (tag v8.5.1) are bundled as
vis-timeline-8.5.1.LICENSE.txt and copied into every assets/ folder
with the library: both licenses require the notice to travel with
copies.
- The loader waits for the stylesheet as well as the script. A missing
CSS file used to open an unstyled timeline that no later click could
fix; now the load fails, the failed element is removed, and the next
click retries. The pending load is shared, so two quick clicks don't
insert the files twice.
- A page rendered without an output folder gets its own message instead
of being told to keep an assets/ folder it never had.
- Browser test helpers create pages in a private mkdtemp() folder that
teardown removes, instead of leaving assets/ in the shared temp dir.
Not changed: comparing asset contents rather than sizes. Altering
assets/ needs write access to the output folder, where the pages
themselves live; partial writes are already ruled out by temp file +
os.replace and versioned names, and hashing 540 KB per rendered page
would cost every run. String-only renders keep no timeline, as the
review on #281 asked.
