What was wrong

Chat answers were shown as plain text, so **bold** appeared with asterisks. On a long chat, the chat list on the left scrolled out of view with the page.

What changed

  • Answers go through the same sanitised Markdown renderer as the memory cards. Citation markers become buttons after sanitising, and only markers that name a known source do. Clicking one opens the source dialog as before.
  • Bold text, headings, bullets and numbers use the primary colour in chat answers. Memory cards keep their muted labels.
  • Headings use a short scale: 18, 16, 15 and 14px over 14px body text. Paragraphs, lists and headings have looser spacing.
  • On wide screens the chat list stays in view while a long chat scrolls, and scrolls inside its own height.
  • docs/web-ui-chat.md has a short "Reading answers" section.

Tests

  • New tests/web-chat-answer-html.test.ts (citation buttons). Fails when the known-source check is removed.
  • web/tests/chat-components.spec.tsx covers markdown in an answer and the chip click. It fails when answers skip the renderer. The old chip test looked for the CitationChip component, so it now checks the same behaviour on the new buttons. Bun has no DOM for DOMPurify, so this spec stubs it with plain marked.
  • New web/tests/chat-list-sticky.spec.tsx fails on the old layout.
  • bun run ci:local passed.

Not checked

  • Light theme and RTL answers were not viewed in a browser.
  • Narrow-screen layout was not viewed. The change only touches md and wider.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Chat answers now display formatted Markdown, including bold text, styled headings and lists, and interactive citation buttons. Deleted citations appear dimmed and struck through.
    • The conversation list stays visible while scrolling on medium and wider screens.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on answer formatting and the conversation list’s behavior on wide screens.

📝 Walkthrough

Chat answers now render Markdown with linked citation buttons and updated typography. The conversation list uses sticky positioning on medium and larger screens. Tests cover citation rendering and clicks, Markdown formatting, and the conversation-list layout.

Changes: Chat UI updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Markdown and citation rendering
web/src/lib/chat-answer-html.ts, web/src/lib/components/chat/AnswerBubble.tsx, tests/web-chat-answer-html.test.ts, web/tests/chat-components.spec.tsx
linkCitations converts recognized citation markers into buttons and preserves unknown markers. AnswerBubble renders Markdown and opens a source when its citation is clicked. Tests cover citation markup, citation clicks, and bold Markdown rendering.
Answer styling and documentation
web/src/app.css, docs/web-ui-chat.md
Answer Markdown and citation buttons receive new typography, spacing, color, hover, and focus styling. Documentation describes answer formatting and wide-screen conversation-list behavior.
Sticky conversation list
web/src/lib/components/chat/ChatView.tsx, web/tests/chat-list-sticky.spec.tsx
The conversation-list aside sticks on medium and larger screens, has a viewport-based maximum height, and retains vertical scrolling. A test checks its layout classes.

Change: Bug fix

Some answers containing citation-like text in links or code may render incorrectly. This is a bounded presentation issue, so the change is mergeable with a follow-up to restrict replacement to eligible text.

Comment thread web/src/lib/chat-answer-html.ts Outdated
linkCitations replaced markers across the whole HTML string, so a marker
in a link title got button markup inside the attribute, and a marker in
a code span became a source button. It now walks the HTML tag by tag and
replaces markers only in text outside a, code, pre and button.
