Summary

Python 3.9 reached end of life in October 2025. The ubuntu-latest runner (Ubuntu 26.04) no longer ships it, so the 3.9 test job fails.

  • Require Python 3.10 or later (requires-python, classifiers, Ruff target).
  • Remove 3.9 from the CI test matrix.
  • Update the README and examples README.
  • Add a BREAKING.md entry for 0.3.x.

The Ruff UP ignores stay for now. Enabling them rewrites ~540 annotations, so that belongs in a separate PR (marked with a TODO).
