fixed mismatch between UI and CLI because CLI was still using brev-deploy/workspaces to drive status

new dev-plane client and site updates, made the PR a bit chatty

  • store.NewDevPlaneClient builds one authenticated ConnectRPC bundle (Instances, Environments, Organizations, ExternalNodes, ManagedSecrets) over a shared HTTP client with CLI attribution params.

small bug fix that's failing on main from merge conflicts

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • GPU creation and launch now wait for environments to reach a ready state, report provisioning failures, and respect cancellation.
    • Workspace listings reflect environment status and provide provisioning failure details.
    • Hardware details are included when registering external nodes.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Expired API keys and logged-out sessions now receive clearer error messages.
    • Local setup no longer adds an obsolete gRPC URL to generated configuration.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The change adds a shared DevPlane ConnectRPC client bundle and routes CLI commands through it. Workspace listings overlay environment status, and GPU creation polls environment readiness with caller context. The configuration removes BREV_GRPC_URL, and registration maps hardware profiles into DevPlane NodeSpec messages.

Changes

DevPlane client and CLI behavior

Layer / File(s) Summary
Shared DevPlane clients and store access
pkg/store/*, pkg/config/config.go, Makefile, go.mod
The store creates shared authenticated and public DevPlane client bundles and adds environment lookup methods. Instance-type, managed-secret, and organization requests use the bundle. BREV_GRPC_URL is removed, and ConnectRPC and Protocol Buffers dependencies are updated.
CLI command client migration
pkg/cmd/ports/*, pkg/cmd/refresh/*, pkg/cmd/util/externalnode.go, pkg/cmd/{deregister,enablessh,grantssh,mintcert,register,revokessh}/*, pkg/cmd/launch/secrets.go
CLI operations obtain DevPlane service clients through the shared client bundle instead of constructing legacy service clients. Test factories are updated to use the new construction path.
Environment status in workspace listings
pkg/cmd/ls/*, pkg/environment/*
Workspace listing fetches organization environments and overlays matching workspace statuses and failure messages. Node listing uses DevPlane external-node types and clients.
Context-aware GPU readiness polling
pkg/cmd/gpucreate/*, pkg/cmd/launch/launch.go, pkg/cmd/launch/launch_test.go
GPU creation polls environment status and returns caller cancellation or deadline errors. Terminal environment failures return validation errors; per-instance timeouts remain non-fatal. Launch passes its command context into GPU creation.
Hardware profile to NodeSpec registration
pkg/cmd/register/*
Node registration converts hardware profiles into DevPlane NodeSpec messages. Tests cover conversion and AddNode and RemoveNode responses; the former register RPC client implementation and tests are removed.

brev ls now fails completely whenever live environment status cannot be fetched. Authenticated requests could forward credentials if the API ever redirected to another origin. GPU creation also stops waiting for an instance after a single transient status error. Address the listing fallback and the redirect policy before merging.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

One transient GetEnvironment error stops polling for that instance.

When GetEnvironment returns any error, pollUntilReady exits at once. waitForInstances then logs the error and moves on, so a single network error ends the readiness wait. The comment on waitForInstances says transient polling errors are non-fatal. That is only true at the command level. Waiting for this instance still stops early. Consider retrying until pollCtx expires.

Restrict redirects before adding the bearer token.

If a Dev Plane endpoint redirects to another origin, http.Client sends the next request through this transport. Line 71 adds the bearer token again, even though Go strips the original Authorization header from cross-origin redirects. The redirected origin can therefore receive the token. Set a CheckRedirect policy in NewAuthenticatedHTTPClient that rejects cross-origin redirects and HTTPS-to-HTTP downgrades. Do not rely on deleting the header from the redirected request; this transport would add it again. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Codex double check

The transport adds Authorization on every request, including redirected requests. A redirect to another host would therefore receive the token despite Go’s normal header protections. Restricting redirects is appropriate. This already existed in the old clients, so it’s an existing security weakness carried into the shared client, not newly introduced by this PR. Exploitation requires the API or its intermediary to issue such a redirect.

@callen-bot Thanks for the clarification. This is an existing security weakness carried into the shared client, not a new weakness introduced by this PR.

The finding remains valid. Token disclosure requires the API or an intermediary to issue a redirect to an attacker-controlled origin. The transport then adds the bearer token again, bypassing Go’s redirect header protections.

A CheckRedirect policy that rejects cross-origin redirects and HTTPS-to-HTTP downgrades remains appropriate.

Learning: In the Go CLI's pkg/store/devplane_client.go, authenticatedTransport.RoundTrip adds Authorization to every request, including redirected requests. Go's normal redirect header stripping does not prevent token disclosure when a custom transport adds Authorization again. Exploitation requires the API or an intermediary to issue a redirect to an attacker-controlled origin.
