Simplify sign-up and add first-login profile walkthrough - #163
Sign-up now asks only for name, email, introduction and how they found us. Submitting it creates the member and emails their first sign-in link automatically. The matching questions moved to a walkthrough on first login, so new members don't face one long form before they can get in.
Optional profile fields now have three states: NULL means "never asked", "" means "skipped", and any other value is the answer. The first-login walkthrough covers four questions (match preference, industry, topics, LinkedIn) and shows only the ones still NULL. Each answer or skip is saved right away. Once every question has been answered or skipped (including "Skip all"), the walkthrough doesn't come back. If a member leaves partway through, it returns next time with only the remaining questions. Admins see both NULL and "" as "—".

New members are guided through unanswered profile questions after signing in. They can skip questions and finish later.
View profile details and edit supported fields, including LinkedIn information. Profile activation controls now explain the effects of pausing or resuming matching.
Sign-up and login forms can carry an email address between screens, reducing the need to enter it again.
Updates
Successful sign-in links now take members to their profile.
The navigation bar shows a Log in button when signed out; the home page provides a sign-up link.
Sign-up now asks only for name, email, introduction and referral source, then emails the new member's first sign-in link automatically. Matching questions move to a walkthrough shown on first login.

The sign-up flow creates an account and requests a sign-in link. Verification now redirects to /profile, where members can complete unanswered profile fields and view or edit their profile.
The sign-up page validates and trims form values, creates an account, and requests a sign-in link. Login supports router-state email prefill, sign-up handoff, and link resend. Successful verification navigates to /profile. Home displays a sign-up link only when the session is absent and loading is complete.

Profile types represent selected fields as nullable. The edit schema excludes email and referral source. Utilities identify unanswered walkthrough fields and normalize LinkedIn values; choice configuration supplies matching and industry options.
The profile page loads the member and starts the walkthrough when fields are unanswered. Members can validate, save, or skip answers; completing the walkthrough switches to the profile view. Tests cover question order, saving, validation, and skip behavior.
The profile form displays details separately from its edit form. Edits omit email and referral source and submit partial values. Activation confirmations use state-specific text, and preference cells display dashes for falsy values.

Possibly related PRs
Patina-Network/patchats#162: Updates match-preference and industry filter values; this PR uses configured match-preference and industry values in profile editing and the first-login walkthrough.
Sign-up can show a server error instead of a field error, and editing a partial member profile can prevent remaining onboarding questions from appearing. These bounded issues warrant owner follow-up; neither blocks the ordinary sign-up and walkthrough path.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 6ed87
The onboarding changes reuse existing authentication controls and do not establish broader server-side authority. However, an existing unsafe profile-link path into the administrative interface remains. The new profile view restricts which stored URLs become links, while account creation and email delivery remain separate operations with a recovery screen.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
observed — The retained path crosses from externally supplied member-profile data through persistent member records into an administrative browser consumer. The generic update endpoint accepts a target member ID without binding it to a principal, so its source reachability is not limited by the self-service walkthrough. These boundaries predate the PR; tenant and production-environment containment were not established.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The verified retained XSS finding concerns unrestricted stored LinkedIn URLs reaching the administrative anchor sink. Base-to-head comparison shows unchanged write behavior and sink exposure. The new profile renderer does not introduce another unrestricted sink, so the finding remains a pre-existing security condition rather than an active PR-introduced architecture concern.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The added automatic request and resend use the existing authentication service. Its rate limiter runs before member lookup, outstanding links remain bounded by expiry and issuance limits, and verification consumes a token through a conditional atomic update. The anonymous POST CSRF exemptions are unchanged by this PR.
observed — The restyled self-activation flow retains the principal-bound /members/me/status endpoint. Production rules require authentication for that endpoint and an administrator role for administrative routes. Status updates set an explicit active value, and reactivation clears the prior deactivation reason; these authority and transition rules are unchanged.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Walkthrough save failures leave the current step active; successful skips persist empty strings, and skipping an already-saved answer preserves it. Pending-state navigation restrictions provide local ordering, not cross-client concurrency protection. The existing repository still performs whole-row updates without a version predicate, so lost-update containment is not strengthened by this flow.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — As follow-up hardening for the pre-existing URL path, enforce an allowed URL policy at the member-write boundary and apply consistent safe-link rendering in the administrative table as well as the profile view.

Preserve unanswered fields when an admin edits a partial profile.
Self-service editing is blocked until the walkthrough finishes, but an admin can edit /admin/members/:id at any time. The edit form converts every NULL field to "" and PATCHes all fields. The backend preserves present empty strings, so the next profile visit no longer sees those questions as unanswered.
Omit only fields that were originally NULL and remain empty. Continue sending fields that were already "", because those represent intentional skips.

Trim whitespace-only values before field validation.
Mantine runs validate on the raw values. memberProfileSchema uses only min(1) for firstName, lastName, and introduction, so a whitespace-only value passes validation. transformValues then trims it to "" at submit. The API rejects the empty string, so the member sees a server error alert instead of an inline field error.
Trim the values before the schema runs. transformValues still trims on submit:

how does it look for the new profile view when the user types in a long answer for their intro, since it's a one line text field? is it crammed visually?
