feat: serve the portal from a flat www image and add the www partition migration - #549
Replace the littlefs static0 image with a flat read-only www image (components/www): a sorted directory of gzipped assets with a truncated SHA-256, mapped once and served by pointer. scripts/utils/wwwimage.py packs it and gen_staticfs.py builds www.bin, which CI merges at the www offset and publishes as the staticfs artifact.
The table turns static0 into www (type 0x40, same offset and size). On the 1.x table the portal still serves littlefs static0 and the OTA update refuses before writing anything. On www, OTA verifies the flashed image and skips it when the hash on flash already matches.
Add partition_layout (parse the binary table, retype one entry in place and re-seal its MD5, guarded table write with write-back) and Www::MigrateToWwwPartition, which downloads the www image over static0, verifies it and retypes static0 as www. Nothing calls it yet.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Captive-portal assets can be served from a dedicated www image, with support for older layouts that store assets in their existing filesystem partition.
Firmware updates select the asset image appropriate to the release and verify it before use. Updates skip rewriting a www image that already matches.
Portal asset responses support conditional requests and HEAD requests, with consistent caching and content metadata.
Documentation
Updated development and storage guides to explain the www image format, release compatibility, and older layouts.

Walkthrough
This change adds a read-only www asset image, firmware support for serving and updating it, and build and release handling for both www.bin and legacy staticfs.bin. It also adds partition-table parsing, replacement, and migration code. The migration function is not yet called.

Image format and validation scripts/utils/wwwimage.py, scripts/tests/test_wwwimage.py, components/www/include/www/WwwImage.h, components/www/src/WwwImage.cpp, components/www/host_test/*, components/common/include/util/HexUtils.h, components/common/host_test/*, components/crypto/include/Hashing.h, components/crypto/host_test/*
The Python packer and C++ parser implement the WWW image format, lookup, and validation. Tests cover packed images, malformed input, hashing, and fixed-extent span conversions.
The build produces www.bin and an optional 1.x LittleFS image. Firmware merge uses --www; publishing selects staticfs.bin for 1.x versions and www.bin for other versions.
Partition-table parsing and replacement components/partition_layout/*
The new component parses and verifies partition tables, retypes entries, reads the live table, and retries writes or restoration. Host tests cover valid and invalid tables and retype outcomes.
WWW partition serving and OTA components/www/include/www/WwwPartition.h, components/www/src/WwwPartition.cpp, components/captive_portal/src/captiveportal/StaticFileServer.*, components/ota/*, components/hwutil/include/hwutil/PartitionUtils.h, components/hwutil/src/PartitionUtils.cpp
The firmware serves assets from a mounted www image or falls back to LittleFS. OTA selects and verifies the appropriate image, and flashing supports an optional first-chunk check before erasing a partition.
The migration function validates the legacy partition and downloaded image before replacing the live table and restarting. Documentation describes migration and recovery; the function is not wired into the update flow.

The firmware's OTA code does not compile because of an invalid logging call, so this cannot merge until the call passes a literal format string. Older hubs with the 1.x partition table now mostly refuse the new www image before erasing anything. In a rare case, a very short first network read still lets the image overwrite the portal assets until a later update succeeds.

Explanation
The title "feat: serve the portal from a flat www image and add the www partition migration" matches the main changes in the changeset. The PR replaces the LittleFS static0 image with a flat www image, adds the www partition handling, and adds the MigrateToWwwPartition migration. The title names both the primary serving change and the migration, so it is specific and clear. It does not mention the partition_layout component or the OTA changes, but it does not need to cover every detail.

Hash the partition table through OpenShock::MD5 from the crypto component instead of a private RFC 1321 implementation, and add a one-shot Hasher::compute for single-buffer hashes. The known-answer test moves to crypto's host tests; the partition_layout host tests now link real mbedTLS.
mbedTLS can fail where the old code could not, so Parse and Retype report HashFailed rather than calling the table corrupt, and Retype restores the entry on failure to keep its unchanged-on-failure promise.
The host SHA-256 existed because mbedTLS was assumed not to build for the linux target, which is no longer true. The stub stays so FailNextHash can still drive the failing-hash test, but it now hashes through mbedtls_md. The known-answer checks move to crypto's host tests, through both the one-shot and the incremental API.
The body hash was a 16-byte truncation. Widen it to the full 32-byte
digest and grow the header from 32 to 64 bytes, leaving 20 reserved
bytes after the hash. The parser now checks every reserved header byte,
not just the first word.
The format has not shipped, so the version stays at 1.
The directory was a flat, sorted list of full paths. It is now a tree:
node 0 is the root, a directory's children are one contiguous run of
nodes sorted by name, and the runs are laid out breadth-first so the
parser can check them in a single pass (each run must start where the
previous one ended). Names are single path components, shared through
the string table. Lookup splits the URL on '/' and binary-searches each
level. A path that resolves to a directory, or passes through a file,
is not found.
Every body is gzipped and the gzip flag is gone: the frontend build
emits plain files and gen_staticfs compresses them all, so the prebuilt
.gz handling goes too. The file server sends Content-Encoding: gzip for
every www asset and 406 to a client that excludes gzip. The immutable
flag stays, for files only.
Node size is unchanged at 16 bytes; the header is as before. Packer,
parser, both test suites and the fixture generator move together. The
format has not shipped, so the version stays at 1.
Names in the image are always lowercase: the packer folds ASCII letters
when building the tree (two paths that differ only in case collide, and
a file cannot shadow a directory by case), and the parser rejects any
stored name with an ASCII uppercase letter. Find() folds the request
path the same way while comparing, so URL case never matters and the
lookup never copies. Only ASCII is folded, on both sides, so the result
does not depend on a locale.
ruff format: the develop merge left a stray blank line in
test_merge_image.py. mypy: wwwimage.pack reused `directory` for the _Dir
being laid out and then for the directory bytes; name the bytes
dir_bytes.
Migration.cpp used its own copy of hwutil's streamed flash-and-hash loop and its own static0 lookup;
FlashPartitionFromUrl now takes an optional first-chunk check (the www magic, before the first erase) and
Migration.cpp calls it. WwwPartition.cpp mapped and parsed the image in two places; VerifyPartition and
ImageSha256 are built on the Partition RAII class and the one-shot hasher. The unused ReadLive() is gone.
HexUtils::ToHex gains a fixed-extent span overload, replacing the hand-rolled hex loop in StaticFileServer.
Both new host-test suites get the sdkconfig.defaults the others ship; the hashing stub is API-complete again.
partition_layout tests now cover the real static0 -> www retype, a span longer than the table sector,
TooManyEntries and a rename-to-self.
Scripts: one www_partition() lookup in utils/partitions.py, one is_immutable() rule and one directory walk
in utils/wwwimage.py (the two packers disagreed on what counts as immutable), and parse() rejects body
padding past the end explicitly like the C++ parser does.
A 1.x hub installs an update with its own OTA code, which writes the release's staticfs artifact over its
littlefs static0 partition and aborts unless that then mounts. Publishing the flat www image as staticfs
would wipe such a hub's portal and fail the update.
gen_staticfs.py --legacy-output packs the same assets as the 1.x littlefs image (/www/<path>.gz, sized for
static0); the build-staticfs action builds both images and the publish step picks the staticfs file by the
release's major version: staticfs.bin for 1.x, www.bin from 2.0.0 on. littlefs-python stays a build
dependency for that output only.
On a 1.x partition table the OTA update no longer refuses: it flashes static0 and verifies it by mounting,
as the 1.x firmware does, and the www hash-skip applies only to a real www partition. The captive portal is
force-closed for the whole install again, including when the www image is already current. The table
rewrite stays with the storage migration release; nothing here calls MigrateToWwwPartition.

… table
On the 1.x table a 2.x release's www image was written over littlefs static0
and only then failed the mount check, leaving the hub without portal assets.
The update now checks the first chunk before the first erase: a www partition
takes only an image with the OSWW magic, static0 refuses one. A mismatch
erases nothing and reports it to the gateway.
Www::StartsLikeImage is shared with the migration's own first-chunk check.
