- Around line 219-223: Add a done() method to _ImmediateFuture that returns
True, so HeapReadHandle.done can check completion for mock-storage reads without
raising AttributeError; leave get() and the size-check behavior unchanged.

LGTM. Reviewed read completion, buffer ownership, native bounds, and decode error handling. All 486 xDR tests passed with the extension built from this revision. GPU checks used compatibility-mode I/O; direct GDS and hardware decompression remain unqualified.
Validate direct image slice bounds and read byte counts. Keep native reads within their worker lifetime and retain Python I/O owners when completion cannot be confirmed. Check per-tile decoder status and size before returning pixels. Signed-off-by: Trent Nelson <trentn@nvidia.com>

Restore task-split KvikIO reads with an exclusively owned, reusable pool that drains on failure. Defer native decode status checks to the existing GPU batch boundary and guard postprocessing per tile. Match the KvikIO thread-pool build definition across the library ABI. Keep standalone decoder calls synchronous and retain completion owners until downstream GPU work finishes. Signed-off-by: Trent Nelson <trentn@nvidia.com>

Short reads, inconsistent batch image shapes, and failed decodes can leave xDR with incomplete pixels or buffers that are still in use. Validate destination bounds, read counts, and per-tile decode status and size before accepting results.
Native reads retain KvikIO task splitting and its small-read GDS threshold, using an exclusively owned, reusable pool that drains on failure. Fused batch decoding checks status at the existing GPU completion boundary, with GPU guards preventing postprocessing of failed tiles. Standalone decodes and separate postprocessing check synchronously. Python buffers and file handles remain retained when I/O completion cannot be confirmed.
A balanced local comparison of 96 MiB cached inputs on an RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell measured 1.7–4.2% compressed-read overhead versus main, down from 19.5–21.7% for the previous implementation in the same run. Uncompressed latency was within 1.3% of main. Full output parity passed across Gzip/DEFLATE and file batch sizes 1/4. Active GDS and hardware decompression were not exercised.
Validation: 514 xDR tests passed with a rebuilt CUDA 13.3 native extension; 351 CPU tests passed with 163 GPU skips. All repository hooks, including mypy, passed. Coverage includes split-read failure draining, concurrent reader recovery, asynchronous decode submission, per-tile status/size rejection, and public batch error propagation without writing failed tiles.
