Opening OM9 offers a new release, but the existing launcher sends users to a browser to download and install it manually. This change keeps the release check at startup only and makes Update download the official SetupLauncher ZIP, verify SHA256/GitHub digest and every manifest file, wait for the user to save/close OM9, install transactionally and reopen the same host/profile. Later offers the update on the next startup; Cancel preserves the current installation. There is no periodic monitoring or forced shutdown.
Timestamp versions, downgrade protection, selected-release identity, bounded downloads, safe ZIP extraction and existing plugin/cache rollback are retained. Native code is unchanged against main. Launcher-only CI reuses the exact matching public native release, preserves its original build-only validation and attests the updated bootstrap archive.
Validation: hosted launcher CI passed 80 PowerShell checks, eight packaging tests and 11 public-source audit tests. The CI archive was downloaded and verified with strict repository/workflow/branch/commit/hosted-runner provenance constraints; it passed 21 real FreeCAD installer/workbench/icon/Start Menu checks. A separate live public-GitHub update/reopen test passed six checks on official FreeCAD 1.1.4 using an isolated profile.
The full Python tooling suite retains 37 historical failures and five errors among 113 tests; names and limits are recorded in docs/validation/2026-10-12-startup-update.json. Launcher verification does not certify all Gumball/CAD workflows. Existing release tags/assets are unchanged; the verified r2 bundle is available as the CI artifact and requires a one-time installation before future in-app updates.
