Slice 3 of the #532 plan (plan comment). Slice 1 merged as #644, slices 2 and 4 as #1257. This is the last open item, so this PR closes the issue.

Closes #532

Root cause

Manager.ApproveExecution (the email-link approve and the SQS approve worker) threw away the row transitionApproveAndExecute returned (_, revocationToken, err := ...). Without the row, executeTokenApprove could not tell a refusal before the claim from a failure after it. Every post-claim failure fell through tokenActionError's default as a bare 500 with no execution_id or status, even though the purchase had run and money may have moved. A 4-eyes denial raised inside the funnel also came back as a 500. Session approve, direct execute and run-now have used the row since #644.

Fix

  • purchase.Manager.ApproveExecution now returns (*config.PurchaseExecution, string, error), with the same contract as ApproveAndExecute and RunPlannedPurchaseNow. The row is nil when the run never started (bad, expired or rotated token, orphan, 4-eyes denial, lost claim). Otherwise it is the claimed row with its final status, including on an execution error.
  • api.executeTokenApprove sends failures to a new tokenApproveFailure:
    • Row returned (the claim was won): the shared executeFailure, as session approve, direct execute and run-now already use. A failed or partially_completed run answers 502 with {execution_id, status}. An audit loss answers 500. A claimed-row refusal (sec(purchase): constraint checks read recs before the CAS; execution buys from the post-CAS row (TOCTOU) #415) keeps its code and now carries the row details. A partially_completed run still gets its executed email with the revocation token, now built from the returned row rather than a DB re-fetch, the same as the session path.
    • No row, 4-eyes denial: 403, matching the other paths.
    • No row, anything else: tokenActionError as before (403 invalid or rotated token, 410 expired, 409 lost claim or wrong status, 500 otherwise).
  • The SQS worker (handleApproveMessage) ignores the row. Its error, and therefore its retry behavior, is unchanged.
  • PurchaseManagerInterface in internal/api/types.go and internal/server/interfaces.go, testutil.MockPurchaseManager and the api test mock now use the new signature. The api mock returns the refused row on a claimed-row refusal, as its ApproveAndExecute already does.
  • openapi.yaml: the approve 502 now covers both session and token mode, and the 409 text says a lost claim is 409 in either mode.

Money path: nothing changes in what is bought or when. The claim, the token pin in the CAS (#1190), the 4-eyes gate, the claimed-row check and the run are untouched. Only the return value, the HTTP status, the response body details, and the source of the partial-run email row changed. The success response stays {"status":"completed"}.

How each #532 item is now covered

Item (issue body + plan comment) Covered by
Session approve maps every error to 409 #644 (executeFailureError)
Direct execute maps every error to 409; executed_at stamped before the claim #644 (Manager.DirectExecute stamps after the CAS)
Token approve: post-claim failures are a raw 500, not 502 with the row status; no row returned this PR
Partial runs mint no revocation token and send no executed email #1257
Approved-row claim race needs a test or a documented single claimer #1257 (TestSingleClaim_StrandedRedriveMidSyncRunCannotBuyAgain)

Verification

Local Linux VM, Go 1.26.9. Everything ran with AWS_CONFIG_FILE=/dev/null AWS_SHARED_CREDENTIALS_FILE=/dev/null AWS_EC2_METADATA_DISABLED=true. Unit tests use testify mocks. The integration test uses real PostgreSQL (testcontainers) with the ramp-step fixture's fake provider. Nothing calls a cloud API.

Fail before (unit, mutation-style). I temporarily put back main's handler logic (_, revocationToken, approveErr := ..., then tokenActionError), keeping only the new signature, and ran go test ./internal/api/ -count=1 -run 'TestTokenApprove_FailureMappedByCause':

  • provider_failure_after_the_claim: expected a client error, got AWS RI purchase failed (bare 500)
  • final_status_not_saved: expected a client error, got audit loss: ... (on main this was already a 500, just a plain one)
  • 4-eyes_denial_before_the_claim: expected a client error, got approval declined: ... (500, not 403)

Under the same revert, TestExecutedNotification_PartialTokenApproveEmailsRevocationToken fails with This call was unexpected on the second GetExecutionByID: main re-fetched the row for the partial email, and the test pins that the email comes from the returned row. The lost-claim, rotated-token and store-error cases pass both before and after. They are regression guards that the pre-claim mapping did not change.

Pass after:

  • go test ./internal/api/ -count=1: ok. go test ./internal/purchase/ -count=1: ok. go test ./internal/server/ -count=1: ok. go test ./internal/mocks/ -count=1: ok.
  • New and changed unit tests: TestTokenApprove_FailureMappedByCause (6 cases), TestExecutedNotification_PartialTokenApproveEmailsRevocationToken (502 with status partially_completed, one email from the returned row, no re-fetch), TestManager_ApproveExecution_ReturnsRowOnExecutionFailure (failed row returned), plus row assertions added to TestManager_ApproveExecution_Success (row completed) and TestManager_ApproveExecution_TransitionFails (nil row).
  • Integration on real Postgres: go test -tags integration -count=1 -timeout 20m -run 'TestApproveExecution_ReturnsTheFinalRow|TestApproveExecution_TokenRotatedBeforeClaimIsRefused|TestApproveAndExecute_PartialRunMintsRevocationToken|TestApproveAndExecute_FailedRunMintsNoToken' ./internal/purchase/: all pass. The new TestApproveExecution_ReturnsTheFinalRow drives the token approve on a fan-out root that ends partially_completed: it returns that row, the stored status matches, and the stored hash matches the returned token. It also drives a failed single-account row (returns the failed row, no token) and then a second approve of the same row, which loses the CAS with ErrExecutionNotInExpectedStatus, returns no row and buys nothing. This test pins the new contract. It cannot fail-before because the old signature does not compile against it.
  • go build ./..., go vet ./..., go vet -tags integration ./...: clean.
  • golangci-lint v2.10.1 run --allow-parallel-runners --build-tags integration ./internal/purchase/ ./internal/api/ ./internal/server/ ./internal/testutil/: 0 issues.
  • gocyclo -over 10 -ignore "_test\.go" on the changed non-test files: silent. gofmt -l internal/: clean.

No DB or migration change. No new concurrency surface: the claim CAS is unchanged, and the lost-claim case is covered by the integration test above.

Combined-tree verification at local queue commit 2be43e1e = origin/main b9271e88 + fix/issue-363-next, fix/issue-177-next, fix/issue-919-next, fix/issue-313-next, fix/issue-532-next and fix/issue-316-next merged in that order. Passed: go build ./...; go vet with and without -tags integration; go test -race -short -count=1 ./...; golangci-lint v2.10.1 with and without the integration tag; gocyclo -over 10; go test -race -tags integration on internal/api, internal/auth, internal/config, internal/database/postgres/migrations, internal/purchase, internal/server and internal/testutil; the git-secrets scan and scripts/test-git-secrets-allowlist.sh.

Out of scope (noted, not changed)

  • On a successful token approve the executed email still comes from a DB re-fetch (emailTokenApproveOutcome), even though the row is now returned. I left this alone to keep the slice to status and response changes. Switching it to the returned row is a small follow-up.
  • On a successful session approve, executeSessionApprove emails the pre-approve execution snapshot rather than the returned final row. This is pre-existing cosmetic email content and does not affect the revoke link.
  • If the row vanishes between the handler's read and ApproveExecution's own read, the token path returns execution not found: <id> without wrapping config.ErrNotFound, so it answers 500 rather than 409. The handler has just loaded the row, so this is very unlikely.
  • When a token approve partially completes over SQS, the worker still returns the error to SQS, as before. A redelivery is refused (the token was rotated and the row is no longer pending), so nothing is bought twice.

Frontend follow-up for the UI owner

None required. The approve endpoint already answers 502 in session mode (since #644), and the client shows the server's error message. Token-mode approvals now get the same 502 body (execution_id, status) on a failed or partial run.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Behavior changes found in review (added after review)

  • If a token approve partly completes and minting the revocation token fails, the "executed" email now goes out without a revoke link. Before, no email was sent. This matches session approve.
  • A run refused after the claim but before any purchase now answers 502 "failed", even though no money moved. The openapi text says money may have moved. Narrowing that wording is a follow-up.

…m failures 502

ApproveExecution (the email-link and SQS approve) discarded the row the
approve funnel returned, so the token-mode handler could not tell a
refusal before the claim from a provider failure after it: every
post-claim failure fell through tokenActionError as a bare 500, and a
4-eyes denial from the funnel was a 500 too.

ApproveExecution now returns the funnel's row, as ApproveAndExecute and
RunPlannedPurchaseNow do: nil when the run never started, the final row
otherwise. The token handler maps a failure with a row through the same
executeFailure as session approve, direct execute and run-now (502 with
execution_id and status for a failed or partially_completed run, 500 for
an audit loss, the partial-run email sent from the returned row), and a
4-eyes denial to 403. Refusals before the claim keep tokenActionError.
The SQS worker ignores the row. Nothing changes in what is bought or when.

Independent review (IAmJSD's agent, fresh context, given only the diff, the issue and the PR text): VERDICT: APPROVE e28eaff7742ffb19cd1042df4b8c7acc17a0a1b4

Blocking:

  • none

Non-blocking:

  • internal/api/handler_purchases.go:1101-1117, a behavior change the body does not mention: a partially_completed token approve whose best-effort revocation-token mint failed (final partial, token "") used to send no email, because main's approveErr != nil && revocationToken == "" returned early. Now executeFailure → IsCommittedPartialRun sends the executed email with no revoke panel (the template's {{if .RevocationToken}}). That matches session approve, direct execute and run-now, and telling the approver that money moved is the better outcome. It should still be in the body.
  • Token-mode failures after the claim now return the provider error text in the 502 message (execution X failed: <provider error>). On main they rendered as the generic Internal server error. The caller is a signed-in account contact_email approver and the session path already does the same, so I don't consider this a leak. It is still a small widening of what a contact-only approver sees.
  • internal/api/handler_purchases.go:1127-1132: the doc comment for emailTokenApproveOutcome now has one very long line, from a partial reflow. Cosmetic.

Attacked:

  • Traced every return of transitionApproveAndExecute/claimAndCheck. The row is nil for the 4-eyes denial, a lost or token-pinned CAS (ErrApprovalTokenChanged), and a lost audit stamp (errClaimLostBeforePurchase wraps ErrExecutionNotInExpectedStatus), so those still go to tokenActionError with 403/409. The row is non-nil only after the claim (claimed-row refusal or an executeAndFinalize error). A terminal-save failure wraps ErrAuditLoss and stays 500. Stale Azure pricing stays 409. Nothing changes the claim, the CAS token pin, the gates or the SQS worker's returned error, so there is no new double-buy or retry path.
  • Fail-before, in a second scratch worktree: put main's handler logic back with the new signature. TestTokenApprove_FailureMappedByCause fails on provider failure, audit loss and the 4-eyes case. TestExecutedNotification_PartialTokenApproveEmailsRevocationToken fails on the unexpected second GetExecutionByID. The lost-claim, rotated-token and store-error cases pass, as expected for guards.
  • Ran go build ./..., go vet with and without -tags integration, and go test -race -short -count=1 on internal/{api,purchase,server,testutil,mocks}: all ok. go test -race -tags integration -count=1 on internal/{purchase,api,server}: all ok, including the new TestApproveExecution_ReturnsTheFinalRow. golangci-lint v2.10.1 with and without the integration tag: 0 issues. gocyclo -over 10 on the changed files: clean.
  • Closes #532 is right: fix(purchase): map session approve and direct execute failures by cause #644 and fix(purchase): make partially_completed runs revocable and emailed; pin the approved-row single claimer #1257 are merged and cover the other acceptance items.

Body-stale:

  • none

VERDICT: APPROVE e28eaff
PR #1515 is OPEN. I reviewed the head e28eaff against origin/main (one non-merge commit, 22 files, +245/-93).

Findings (no blockers):

  • nit internal/api/handler_purchases.go:482-505 (executeFailureError, which token mode now shares) - a claimed row stopped before any provider call by preExecutionRefusal (armed re-drive, ladder refusal; manager.go:324-335) now answers 502 "execution X failed" with status=failed. On main the token path answered a bare 500. The 502 body says nothing about no_submission, and openapi.yaml says "Money may have moved". "May" keeps the text accurate, and session mode has worked this way since fix(purchase): map session approve and direct execute failures by cause #644, so this is consistency, not a regression. A caller who wants to know whether money moved has to open History.
  • nit internal/api/handler_purchases.go:496 - an audit loss raised by failClaimedBeforeSubmission (step_cap.go:69-70, a refused claimed row whose terminal save failed) now answers 500 "ran but its final status could not be saved", but nothing ran. The status code matches main (500). Only the wording misleads, and the session path already shares it.
  • nit (undocumented behavior change) internal/api/handler_purchases.go:1112-1116 - main skipped the executed email for a partially_completed token run whose best-effort revocation-token mint failed (approveErr != nil && revocationToken == ""). It now sends the email without the revoke panel (template {{if .RevocationToken}}, handler_purchases.go:4060-4063), which matches the session path. This is a reasonable improvement, but the PR body does not mention it.

Attacked:

  • Double purchase. Every post-claim failure returns before any retry or re-entry. The SQS worker (messages.go:183) still returns only the error, so its redelivery behavior is unchanged. A retried HTTP approve loses the claim CAS: the token is rotated and the status is no longer pending or notified, which gives ErrApprovalTokenChanged or ErrExecutionNotInExpectedStatus with a nil row, so 403 or 409. The integration test TestApproveExecution_ReturnsTheFinalRow/failed_run,_then_a_second_approve covers this and I ran it on real Postgres: PASS. The frontend approvePurchase does no 5xx auto-retry (frontend/src/api/purchases.ts:83, client.ts).
  • Purchase that should be refused. The funnel's gates are byte-identical to main: 4-eyes at approvals.go:424, claimAndCheck with the token pinned in the CAS plus ClaimedRowCheck (claim.go:63-77), the stamp-loss stop at approvals.go:453, and preExecutionRefusal. The only change is that the row is returned (approvals.go:99). The delay>0 branch is untouched.
  • Misleading 2xx/5xx. The success response is still {"status":"completed"} and only on err==nil. I traced each non-nil-row error against executeFailureError's order: ErrFourEyesDenied 403, then nil row goes to tokenActionError, ErrAuditLoss 500, ErrClaimedRowRefused keeps its code with execution_id and status, stale Azure pricing 409, partial 502, anything else 502. Every nil-row case maps the same as main, except a 4-eyes denial, which is now 403 instead of 500. Stamp loss returns a nil row (approvals.go:453-455), so it is still 409, not a 502 that would suggest money moved.
  • Row leak. The 502 and refusal details carry only execution_id and status. The caller has already passed authorizeApprovalAction (handler_purchases.go:4469-4499: a signed-in session whose email is the account's contact approver), holds the token, and supplied the execution ID in the URL. The error text includes the provider error, as session mode already does. The partial email's recipients come from the claimed row's recommendations and config, not from the caller. I found no cross-tenant read path.
  • Callers. The build passes, and the only production callers are the handler and the SQS worker, plus the two interface definitions and both mocks. go vet passes with and without -tags integration.
  • Tests. go test -race -count=1 on internal/api, internal/purchase, internal/server and internal/testutil: 6483 passed. The 4 integration tests the PR names, run under heavy.lock with -race on real Postgres: ok. With -v, ReturnsTheFinalRow ran both subtests; neither was skipped.
  • Mutation probe 1: dropping the ErrFourEyesDenied clause in tokenApproveFailure made TestTokenApprove_FailureMappedByCause FAIL ("expected a client error, got approval declined"). Restored; cmp shows the file byte-identical.
  • Mutation probe 2: making tokenApproveFailure call executeFailureError directly, which skips the partial-run email, made TestExecutedNotification_PartialTokenApproveEmailsRevocationToken FAIL (expected 1 email). Restored; byte-identical.
  • Mutation probe 3: making ApproveExecution return a nil row made TestManager_ApproveExecution_Success and TestManager_ApproveExecution_ReturnsRowOnExecutionFailure FAIL. Restored; byte-identical.
  • No store, SQL or migration changes.

Independent review 2 (claude-fleet, cold): REQUEST_CHANGES e28eaff

Base 3bfc2fe; merge-tree onto origin/main ec78d85 (fetched this run) is clean (tree 86a74f62). No migrations in this PR (highest on main is 000147).

Findings:

  • internal/api/handler_purchases.go:1122 - the rewrapped emailTokenApproveOutcome doc comment leaves one line at about 120 columns. No failure, just style. [non-blocking, nit]
  • One blocking finding has been reported privately to the maintainers.

Attacked:

  • Claim 1 ("return the row"): ApproveExecution (internal/purchase/approvals.go:61-100) now returns the row from transitionApproveAndExecute. The row is nil for every refusal before the claim: get/not-found, token, orphan, 4-eyes, a lost CAS (claim.go:68), and a lost audit stamp (approvals.go:449). The HTTP success body is still {"status":"completed"} (handler_purchases.go:1104), so the row never reaches the client on success. A failure body adds only execution_id (already in the URL) and status. There is no existence oracle: requireSessionBeforeLookup and concealExecutionDenial run before anything changed here, and the new answers need a valid token plus a won claim.
  • Claim 2 ("502 after the claim"): a row comes back only for a claimed-row refusal (claim.go:74) or an executeAndFinalize error (pre-execution refusals, provider failure, partial run, audit loss). An audit loss stays 500 and stale Azure pricing stays 409. Retry safety: the funnel's state machine is unchanged. A repeat approve after a failed run loses the CAS and gets 409, and nothing is bought (proved by the new integration subtest partial_run_revocation_integration_test.go:93-118). After a partial run the token has rotated, so a repeat gets 403. The frontend client does not auto-retry (frontend/src/api/client.ts:287-310). The SQS worker (messages.go:183) drops the row, so its behaviour is unchanged.
  • Scope (22 files): signature plumbing in 3 interfaces and 2 mocks, call-site updates in 13 test files, the openapi text, and the handler and funnel change. Behaviour changes beyond the two claims: a 4-eyes denial on the token path goes from 500 to 403; a claimed-row refusal body now carries execution_id/status; the partial-run email is now built from the returned row, not a DB re-fetch.
  • Fail-before: the new tests cannot compile on base because the signature changed. I put an adapted copy in the base export using the old (string, error) shape, and it fails on base for both the provider-failure 502 and the 4-eyes 403 ("expected a client error, got AWS RI purchase failed"). I removed it afterwards.
  • Mutation probes (head export, each restored with cp and checked identical with cmp):
P1, drop the final == nil guard in tokenApproveFailure: TestTokenApprove_FailureMappedByCause (provider, audit-loss) and TestExecutedNotification_PartialTokenApproveEmailsRevocationToken fail. Killed.
P2, drop the ErrFourEyesDenied exemption: the 4-eyes subtest fails. Killed.
P3, ApproveExecution returns a nil row: TestManager_ApproveExecution_Success and _ReturnsRowOnExecutionFailure fail. Killed.
P4, call executeFailureError instead of executeFailure (no partial email): the partial token-approve test fails. Killed.

Verified locally (GOTOOLCHAIN=go1.26.10, cloud creds nulled):

  • go build ./... OK; gofmt -l on the touched packages: clean.
  • go vet, with and without -tags integration, on internal/{api,purchase,server,testutil}: OK.
  • go test -race -count=1 on the same packages: ok (api 37s, purchase 6s, server 19s).
  • go test -tags integration -count=1 ./internal/purchase/ ./internal/api/: ok (34s, 66s). With -v I confirmed TestApproveExecution_ReturnsTheFinalRow and TestApproveExecution_TokenRotatedBeforeClaimIsRefused ran and passed, not skipped.
  • golangci-lint 2.11.4 on the touched packages: 0 issues.
  • On the merged tree 86a74f62: go vet and go test on api/purchase/server: ok. No caller on main uses the old signature.

Independent review (IAmJSD's agent, fresh context, given only the diff, the issue and the PR text): VERDICT: APPROVE e28eaff7742ffb19cd1042df4b8c7acc17a0a1b4

Blocking:

  • none

Non-blocking:

  • internal/testutil/mocks.go: the default ApproveExecution stub returns (nil, "", nil), which is success with no row. The real contract never returns that. No handler reads the row on success today, so nothing breaks. A future caller that dereferences final on success would panic only under this mock, never in production.
  • internal/api/handler_purchases.go emailTokenApproveOutcome doc comment: one line ("...pre-approve snapshot is a") was not reflowed and runs about 140 columns.
  • The success path still emails from a DB re-fetch rather than the returned row. The body already notes this as a follow-up and I agree. It isn't a correctness issue: the revoke link uses the in-hand token either way.
  • (From the earlier rF5 review and an earlier review by cristim's agent, confirmed here.) A partially_completed token run whose best-effort revocation-token mint failed (row partial, token "") used to send no email: main returned early on approveErr != nil && revocationToken == "". It now sends the executed email without the revoke panel, as the session path does. That's the better behavior, but it isn't documented.
  • (From the earlier review by cristim's agent.) A claimed row that preExecutionRefusal stops before any provider call now answers 502 "execution X failed" with status failed. The openapi text "Money may have moved" is still technically accurate, and session mode has done this since fix(purchase): map session approve and direct execute failures by cause #644.

Attacked:

  • Money path. The change touches only the return plumbing. transitionApproveAndExecute, the token-pinned CAS, the 4-eyes gate, claimAndCheck and runClaimedAndMint are byte-for-byte unchanged. Traced every place the funnel can return. A claim failure, a lost stampClaimedAudit guard and a 4-eyes denial all return a nil row, so tokenApproveFailure keeps tokenActionError (403/410/409) or returns 403 for 4-eyes. A row is returned only after a won claim: a claimed-row refusal (keeps its code, now with details), stale Azure pricing (409), an audit loss (500), a partial run (email from the returned row, then 502) or a failed run (502 with status). The SQS worker discards the row, so its error and retry behavior are unchanged. No path can email or mint twice: executeFailure emails only when IsCommittedPartialRun, and the success path is not reached on error.
  • Fail-before: in a scratch worktree I replaced tokenApproveFailure's body with return tokenActionError(err) (main's mapping, new signature). TestTokenApprove_FailureMappedByCause then fails on provider_failure_after_the_claim, final_status_not_saved and 4-eyes_denial_before_the_claim, and TestExecutedNotification_PartialTokenApproveEmailsRevocationToken fails ("expected a client error, got some purchases failed..."). With the file restored, both pass.
  • Ran at e28eaff: go build ./...; go vet ./... with and without -tags integration; (cd tests/e2e && go vet -tags e2e ./...). go test -race -short -count=1 on internal/{api,purchase,server,testutil}: ok. go test -race -tags integration -count=1 on internal/purchase, internal/server and internal/api: all ok, including TestApproveExecution_ReturnsTheFinalRow and TestSingleClaim_*. golangci-lint v2.10.1 on the four packages, with and without the integration tag: 0 issues. gocyclo -over 10 on the changed non-test files: silent.
  • Closes #532 holds. fix(purchase): map session approve and direct execute failures by cause #644 (df036ad) and fix(purchase): make partially_completed runs revocable and emailed; pin the approved-row single claimer #1257 (1dfd7ab) are on main. DirectExecute stamps executed_at only after the CAS (skipReason is applied after claimAndCheck). This PR covers the last item, the token approve status class.

Body-stale:

  • "Only the return value, the HTTP status, the response body details, and the source of the partial-run email row changed": also changed is whether a partial run with a failed mint gets an email (see the first earlier-review item above).
