fix(frontend): show the server's reason for each excluded RI on the exchange page - #1408
renderExcludedRIsNotice (frontend/src/riexchange.ts) always said "AWS returned no term length" for every excluded RI and ignored the reason the API returns per RI. #1187 added duration exclusions, and #1191 adds missing-pricing exclusions, so the notice showed the wrong cause.
Change:
Excluded RIs are grouped by the server's reason; each group renders as "N convertible RI(s) was/were left out because : ids", groups joined by "; ".
An empty or missing reason falls back to the old term-length text.
Rendering still uses textContent, so reasons and ids are never parsed as HTML.
Tests (red, then green):
New jest cases: duration and pricing reasons in separate groups; the empty/missing-reason fallback; a reason containing HTML special characters rendered as text.
One existing assertion that expected the hard-coded text for a non-empty reason is updated.
Excluded RI notices now group convertible RIs by the reasons returned by the server and display the relevant RI IDs with each reason. When a reason is missing or empty, the notice uses the term-length message. Special characters in reasons display as plain text rather than being interpreted as HTML.

PR #1408 (closes #1407), single commit 0c3462a. Diff: frontend/src/riexchange.ts +9/-2, frontend/src/tests/riexchange.test.ts +29/-1.
Fixes the issue: each excluded RI's server reason is rendered, grouped by reason; the term-length fallback applies only to a falsy reason ('' / missing / null).
Findings (none blocking):
nit internal/api/handler_ri_exchange.go:1634 (and fix(ri-exchange): exclude convertible RIs with no pricing from cost math #1191's excludedRIReason) - reasons say "so its monthly cost cannot be computed"; for N>1 the notice reads "3 convertible RIs were left out because ... so its monthly cost cannot be computed: a, b, c" ("its" with a plural subject). Readable. Rewording on the backend (e.g. "the monthly cost") would fix both counts.
nit frontend/src/riexchange.ts:591-597 - duplicate ri_ids are counted and listed twice ("3 RIs ... a, c, c"). Same as before the PR; the backend emits one entry per AWS RI with a unique ID, so it can't happen in practice.
nit frontend/src/riexchange.ts:593 - a whitespace-only reason is not treated as empty (renders "because : id"). The backend never sends one.
nit: groups are joined by "; " and the reason runs straight into ": ids". A reason containing ':' or ';' would blur where groups and ids start. Neither backend string contains one.
XSS: the reason <img src=x onerror=alert(1)> & "q" renders literally, querySelector('img') is null and there are 0 child elements. The id XSS test is still there.
Pluralisation: 1 vs N per group is correct, and mixed reasons give separate groups in insertion order.
Callers: riexchange.ts:124,184,199,559,564. The signature is unchanged, and the clear path (undefined/[]) is unchanged.
a11y: no role/aria-live before or after, so nothing changed (no regression). Same element, id and class.
Mutation probes (restored after each):
(1) hard-coded text instead of the reason: 3 tests fail;
(2) fallback removed: 1 test fails;
(3) textContent changed to innerHTML: 2 tests fail;
(4) plural logic inverted: 4 tests fail.
Runs on a scratch export of the head: npm ci ok; npx jest riexchange 10 suites, 160 passed; npx tsc --noEmit clean.
CI (gh pr checks 1408): all 32 checks still pending at review time, none failed. Green CI is not confirmed.

[non-blocking] frontend/src/riexchange.ts:593 - When reason is empty or missing, the fallback text names one specific cause: "AWS returned no term length".
The server cannot actually send an empty reason. ExcludedRI.Reason is json:"reason" with no omitempty, and it is always filled (handler_ri_exchange.go:1634), so only legacy or malformed data reaches this branch.
A neutral wording such as "an unspecified reason" would be more honest.
[non-blocking] frontend/src/tests/riexchange.test.ts:1603-1614 - The new tests use made-up reasons ("non-positive duration", "no pricing available"), not the real server strings.
The renderer does not depend on the wording, and the real strings read correctly: "1 convertible RI was left out because AWS returned no term length (duration), so its monthly cost cannot be computed: ri-0".
So this is only a missing contract test.
Attacked:
Field names: the Go JSON tags ExcludedRI{RIID "ri_id", Reason "reason"} and ExcludedRIs "excluded_ris,omitempty" (handler_ri_exchange.go:2065-2072) match the TS ExcludedRI {ri_id; reason} and excluded_ris? (frontend/src/api/riexchange.ts:64-72) exactly.
Counts and plurals: the count is per group. The 1+1 mixed test asserts "1 ... was" twice, and the fallback test asserts "2 ... RIs were".
Callers:renderExcludedRIsNotice has 5 call sites (riexchange.ts:124, 184, 199, 559, 564). Its signature is unchanged, and only :559 passes data.
XSS: only textContent is assigned. Nothing uses innerHTML or insertAdjacentHTML.
Mutation probes on riexchange.ts, each restored and confirmed identical with cmp:
innerHTML instead of textContent: 2 tests FAIL, the <img src=x onerror> ri_id test and the <b> reason-injection test.
e.reason ignored, so the fallback is always used: 3 FAIL.
The total excluded.length instead of the per-group count: the grouped test FAILS.
Grouping dropped, so the map entry is overwritten: 2 FAIL.
?? instead of ||, so an empty reason no longer falls back: the fallback test FAILS.
Verified locally, on the head export after npm ci --ignore-scripts, under the heavy lock:
npx tsc --noEmit: OK.
npx jest --coverage=false src/__tests__/riexchange.test.ts: 91/91 pass.
Fail-before: with the head test file on base, 3 of 91 FAIL: the updated ids test, the grouped test and the HTML-reason test. The fallback test passes on base, as expected, because base hard-codes that text.
No Go code or migration change.

Frontend: npm ci, tsc --noEmit and npm run build pass on the merged tree, and the full jest suite has no failures beyond those that fail identically on main in this local environment (CI runs the authoritative jest suite).
The grouping copied the growing id list for every RI, which is quadratic
when many RIs share one reason. Push to the existing list instead.

Delta 0c3462a..1246f2f: one commit, frontend/src/riexchange.ts only (+3/-1), in renderExcludedRIsNotice.
Behaviour: the first occurrence of a reason still calls Map.set, so Map insertion order of reasons is unchanged. Later occurrences push onto the same array, so ids within a group keep input order. The arrays are local to the Map and never escape before rendering, so mutating them in place is safe. Empty or missing reason still falls back to 'AWS returned no term length'.
Verification (fresh git archive export of 1246f2f): npm ci exit 0; npx jest riexchange gave 10 suites and 160 tests passed; npx tsc --noEmit was clean (exit 0).
What changed: one commit, 1246f2f, which changes only frontend/src/riexchange.ts (+3/-1).
The reason grouping now appends to the existing id list (ids.push(e.ri_id)) instead of copying it on every iteration ([...(byReason.get(reason) ?? []), e.ri_id]).
The behaviour is identical:
the first occurrence of a reason still creates [e.ri_id];
Map keeps insertion order;
no other code holds a reference to these arrays.
The textContent-only rendering and the fallback are unchanged.
Verified locally, on the reviewed export (after npm ci --ignore-scripts) with the new riexchange.ts applied:
npx tsc --noEmit: rc 0.
npx jest --coverage=false src/__tests__/riexchange.test.ts: 91/91 pass.
Probe: the push made a no-op, so later ids are never appended. 2 tests FAIL, so the grouping tests still bite on the new code. Restored, and confirmed identical to the head blob with cmp.
The earlier non-blocking notes still apply: the empty-reason fallback wording, and the made-up reason strings in the tests.
Same reviewer as the earlier review, re-reviewing the new head. Review only: nothing was pushed, and the GitHub review state is unchanged.
Local verification at 1246f2fd5c6642abbbcfa08d30fcfea9374ec51c merged onto current main (2ded6488; merge-tree 976d275c; macOS):
