refactor(gcp): share term price scaling and cache the Cloud Storage catalog - #646
Finishes the GCP dedup from #95. #634 and #637 moved the shared SKU matching, pricing extraction and catalog listing into providers/gcp/internal. What was left:
The price guard and term scaling block, still copied in getSQLPricing, getRedisPricing and getStoragePricing. It now lives in skumatch.ScaleToTerm. The error messages are the same strings as before, and a table test pins them.
Cloud Storage was the only one of the three that re-listed the SKU catalog on every pricing lookup. It now uses the per-client skulist.Cache, like Cloud SQL and Memorystore. Cloud Storage purchases are not supported, so no purchase path reads this.
GetOfferingDetails had the same payment split and struct build in cloudsql, memorystore, cloudstorage and computeengine. It now calls skumatch.OfferingDetails. Behavior is unchanged: an unknown payment option still prices as upfront. ValidateOffering uses slices.Contains.
What stays per service: the label and error wording, the OfferingID prefix, and each get*Pricing composing the shared resolve, list, extract and scale steps. The exported *Pricing structs stay separate, because merging them would change the public API.
Tests
TestScaleToTerm: zero and negative on-demand and commitment prices (exact error text), and 1-year and 3-year values.
TestOfferingDetails: every payment option (including unknown and empty) for 1yr and 3yr, all fields asserted.
Per service, exact error text for both price errors, pinning the service label and the region.
cloudstorage: TestListSKUs_CachedPerClient and a service ID test, mirroring cloudsql.
Mutation probes: weakening the <= 0 guard, changing the monthly divisor, changing a service label, dropping the region, and listing without the cache each fail a test.
providers/gcp: go build, go vet and go test ./... pass with and without the workspace (GOWORK=off), and golangci-lint reports 0 issues.
Cloud Storage pricing retrieves its SKU catalog once per client.
Cloud SQL, Cloud Storage, Memorystore, and Compute Engine now report offering costs consistently across payment options.
Cloud SQL, Cloud Storage, and Memorystore use consistent term-based pricing and savings calculations.
Bug Fixes
Pricing calculations now return clear errors when on-demand or commitment rates are zero or negative, including the affected service and region where available.
… and Cloud Storage

Explanation
Issue #95 requires shared GCP helpers so fixes do not remain duplicated across services. The reviewed head provides shared providers/gcp/internal/skumatch helpers for term parsing, SKU matching, price extraction, term scaling, savings, and offering details. It provides shared providers/gcp/internal/skulist helpers for billing-service resolution and cached SKU listing. Cloud SQL, Cloud Storage, and Memorystore use these helpers. The PR also adds tests for shared scaling and offering behavior, service-specific error text, and Cloud Storage cache behavior.

TestListSKUs_CachedPerClient calls c.listSKUs directly. A regression that changes getStoragePricing back to svc.ListSKUs(...) would still pass this test. Existing getStoragePricing tests invoke the method only once and do not assert billing-call counts.
Add a test that configures the counting billing service on the client, calls getStoragePricing repeatedly with valid SKUs, and asserts one catalog call.

Cold review (claude-cc-libs reviewer agent) at 5c8f194: REQUEST_CHANGES
The code change is correct. The blocker is the Closes #95 claim: the duplication that #95 describes is still in all three clients.
Findings
(blocking, scope/claim) The PR body says "the three clients differ only in their exported pricing struct names and their service labels". refactor(gcp): cloudsql, cloudstorage and memorystore clients are near-verbatim copies #95 defines the defect as code that is "byte-identical modulo the receiver type and one identifier", so that sentence restates the issue instead of closing it. Still triplicated, compared with diff:
GetOfferingDetails: cloudsql/client.go:169-206, memorystore/client.go:156-193, cloudstorage/client.go:152-189. The 38 lines differ only in the get*Pricing call and the OfferingID prefix. This includes the payment-option default: branch (cloudsql:190, memorystore:177, cloudstorage:173). refactor(gcp): cloudsql, cloudstorage and memorystore clients are near-verbatim copies #95 names that branch (A08b-013) as the drift example.
ValidateOffering: cloudsql:153, memorystore:140, cloudstorage:136. The bodies match except for the label.
SQLPricing/RedisPricing/StoragePricing (cloudsql:243, memorystore:206, cloudstorage:204) are skumatch.TermPrices plus Currency. The get*Pricing skeleton (Resolve, listSKUs, extract, ScaleToTerm, field-by-field copy) is still about 25 lines in each client.
Fix: lift these into providers/gcp/internal (for example, a shared offering-details builder that takes the pricing function and the ID prefix, and one pricing struct), or change Closes #95 to Refs #95 and leave refactor(gcp): cloudsql, cloudstorage and memorystore clients are near-verbatim copies #95 open with the remaining list.
(minor, test claim) The body says "a table test pins" the error messages. TestScaleToTerm only pins the template. No service test pins the per-service label or the region argument. Probes 3-5 below changed them and every test still passed. Service tests only check Contains "no pricing found". This was not a regression, because main also did not pin them. Consider one exact EqualError per service.
Verified correct
Old and new formulas compared line by line. HourlyRate, CommitmentPrice (=chyears*8760), OnDemandPrice and SavingsPercentage are unchanged. "no pricing found for %s" with "Cloud SQL tier "+tier builds the same bytes as the old "... tier %s", tier. The same holds for Memorystore and for Cloud Storage "class". The guard order (on-demand first) is kept. NaN reaches the scaling code on both main and head (NaN <= 0 is false), so the behaviour is the same. No label is swapped between services.
Cache: Cloud Storage now matches cloudsql and memorystore. The mutex covers check and fill, so concurrent callers share one listing. Errors are not cached. The service ID is pinned by a test. SetBillingService after a first lookup keeps the cached catalog. That was already true for cloudsql and memorystore, and only tests call the setter, so it is consistent and not a new risk. A (nil, nil) listing still panics on skus.Skus as it did before.
Commits: 0ba381b is +89/-45 and 5c8f194 is +61/-1, both <= 400. The CHANGELOG line is accurate. No dead code: common is still used in every client. CI: 13/13 SUCCESS.
I compared the old inline logic from cloudsql/client.go:255-295 at 811d660, parameterised by service label, against skumatch.ScaleToTerm. The grid was 11 on-demand x 11 commitment values x terms 1 and 3 x 3 labels, with values -1, 0, 1e-12, 0.0123456789, 0.1, 0.3, 7.77, 1e9, +Inf, -Inf and NaN.
HourlyRate, CommitmentPrice, OnDemandPrice and SavingsPercentage match bit for bit, and the error strings match exactly. Operation order is unchanged.
The labels are right: "Cloud SQL tier", "Memorystore tier" and "Cloud Storage class".
NaN passes both <= 0 guards in the old code and the new, so this is not a regression.
Cache
skulist.Cache (internal/skulist/cache.go:19-30) is mutex-guarded and never stores a failed listing.
Cloud Storage (cloudstorage/client.go:282-283) uses it the same way cloudsql does (cloudsql/client.go:304), with the unchanged service ID services/95FF-2EF5-5EA1.
The only parallel code left is the three get*Pricing bodies, which now differ only in struct, label and extractor.
Hygiene
Commit sizes are +89/-45 and +61/-1.
The CHANGELOG line is accurate.
go vet shows no dead code.
Mutation probes (each reverted)
These fail a named test: swapping the 1yr/3yr scale, dropping either <= 0 guard, a cache that never reuses, and a wrong Cloud Storage service ID.
Caching a failed listing is an equivalent mutant. The response is nil on error, so nothing is stored. The cache's error path is covered by the skulist tests.
Non-blocking notes
SetBillingService does not invalidate the cache after a first lookup. cloudsql (client.go:72-73) behaves the same way, and production never swaps the service after construction, so this only matters in tests.
The cache is keyed per client, not per service ID. That is fine while each client uses a single ID.
Build, test and lint at 5c8f194, in a detached scratch worktree, run under the heavy lock with -count=1:
Move the payment split and OfferingDetails build repeated in the Cloud SQL,
Memorystore, Cloud Storage and Compute Engine clients into
skumatch.OfferingDetails; an unknown payment option still pays upfront.
Use slices.Contains in the ValidateOffering bodies and pin the service
label and region in the ScaleToTerm errors per service.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Agreed: the PR did not yet justify "Closes refactor(gcp): cloudsql, cloudstorage and memorystore clients are near-verbatim copies #95". A follow-up commit on this branch moves the GetOfferingDetails payment split and struct build into one shared helper. There were four copies, because computeengine has the same block as the three clients named in the issue. That includes the payment-option default: branch the issue gives as its drift example. Its behavior is unchanged: an unknown option still prices as upfront, and changing that is a separate decision. ValidateOffering now uses slices.Contains, so what is left per service is its label and error wording. Each get*Pricing keeps only its own calls to the shared resolve, list, extract and scale steps. The exported *Pricing structs stay as they are, because merging them would change the public API.
Agreed: each service now gets exact error-text tests that pin its label and the region.
Both reviewers will be asked to re-review at the new head.
skumatch.OfferingDetails (internal/skumatch/savings.go:47-73) is byte-identical to the four removed copies in cloudsql, memorystore, cloudstorage and computeengine:
"all-upfront"/"upfront" put the whole total up front. "monthly"/"no-upfront" spread it as total/(years*12). An unknown or empty option still falls to default, which pays up front.
The removed recurringCost = 0 and upfrontCost = 0 lines only assigned zero values that were already set, so dropping them changes nothing.
All nine OfferingDetails fields map to the same sources as before. TotalCost and the split amounts are both pricing.CommitmentPrice.
Each service keeps its own OfferingID prefix: gcp-cloudsql, gcp-memorystore, gcp-storage and gcp-compute.
ValidateOffering now uses slices.Contains, which does the same exact-match check as the old loop. The error strings are unchanged.
TestOfferingDetails covers every payment option with both 1yr and 3yr, including "bogus" and "", and checks the full struct.
The scale_errors_test.go files pin the exact EqualError text, label and region for each of the three services.
On "Closes #95"
Every helper that #95 lists now either lives in providers/gcp/internal or is gone from these clients. That includes the payment-option default (A08b-013), which now has one copy.
What is left in each client is a short get*Pricing (Resolve, listSKUs, extract, ScaleToTerm, copy fields), plus GetOfferingDetails and ValidateOffering wrappers of about 10 lines that only call shared code with service labels. A pricing or term fix would now land once in the shared code, so I accept closing #95.
Non-blocking follow-ups
OfferingDetails takes commitmentTotal and hourlyRate as adjacent float64 arguments, so they are easy to swap by mistake. I swapped them at each call site, passing pricing.CommitmentPrice as the hourly rate. Only cloudstorage failed a test (TestStoragePricingUnits_PublicConsumers); cloudsql, memorystore and computeengine still passed.
Changing the OfferingID prefix in cloudsql or computeengine also passed every test.
Main had the same two test gaps, so neither is a regression. One GetOfferingDetails test per service that checks EffectiveHourlyRate and OfferingID would close both. Passing TermPrices or the pricing struct instead of loose floats would also remove the swap risk.
A scratch test compared the old per-service GetOfferingDetails logic with skumatch.OfferingDetails at the float-bit level, then was deleted. Inputs:
payment options all-upfront, upfront, monthly, no-upfront, partial, garbage and "";
terms 0, 1 and 3;
totals 0, 1234.5678, 1e300, NaN, +Inf and -3.
Every OfferingDetails field matched.
Unknown or empty payment still gives upfront = total and recurring = 0. Operation order is unchanged (total / (float64(years) * 12)).
computeengine's old copy was identical. Its gcp-compute- ID prefix is preserved.
slices.Contains accepts the same set, and the error text is unchanged.
refactor(gcp): cloudsql, cloudstorage and memorystore clients are near-verbatim copies #95. What remains duplicated across the clients is the GetOfferingDetails and ValidateOffering shell, which differs only in the pricing call, ID prefix and label. The other remaining functions are per-service. This was checked function by function, not as a full pairwise diff of every body.
Mutation probes. Each of these fails a named test:
swapping the cloudsql label;
dropping the region in memorystore's scale call;
removing the unknown-payment default;
setting hourly to total;
hard-coding the currency.
Hygiene. The commit is +206/-112, there is no dead code, and the repo has no CHANGELOG.
Minor, non-blocking.computeengine/client.go:879ValidateOffering still uses a manual loop, while the other three clients use slices.Contains. Behaviour is the same.
Build at e877154 in a detached scratch worktree, under the heavy lock with -count=1:

* refactor(gcp): use slices.Contains in the Compute Engine offering check
Matches the Cloud SQL, Memorystore and Cloud Storage clients after #646.
