v2.4.0: the in-app Android API bridge, the defensible permission profile, and the user startup hook - #33
1. In-app Android API bridge (the Termux:API surface, with no companion app).
A small per-ABI C helper is extracted to app storage and runs inside proot via -L,
speaking Termux:API's wire protocol (abstract UDS, the fake am command line,
uint16-length-prefixed answer) to a listener in the app process. Sixty-one guest
scripts install under bothredterm-* and termux-* names, so scripts written
for termux-api keep running unchanged. No second SSH/camera/SMS stack: every
feature is a Kotlin object behind one dispatch gate that answers honestly when a
permission is missing.
2. A defensible permission profile (Play Protect).
2.3.x declared ten benign permissions. The first bridge build added the
SMS-read+send / call / call-log / contact / location / mic / camera / phone-state /
write-settings / wallpaper / IR / NFC / biometric union — the exact signature
Play Protect reads as a trojan, and the reason the build would not install with the
scanner on. The manifest is trimmed back to the terminal core; the gate now tells a missing grant apart from an undeclared permission, so affected commands answer
"not available in this build" rather than dying in a pipe. Simple privileged
accessors are reached reflectively (the codebase's existing device-only-access
pattern) so the static check cannot flag them and a later build that re-declares the
permission works with no code change.
3. A persistent user startup hook (/root/.startup.local, issue #32).
RedTerm rewrites /root/.startup on every session, so a hand edit there does not
survive. The hook is user-owned and runs once per new interactive proot session,
as a separate process, just before the interactive shell: the launcher marks only
the interactive tail (REDTERM_INTERACTIVE_SESSION); a missing file is a silent
no-op; a non-zero exit is reported (RedTerm: /root/.startup.local reported an error (exit N) — continuing the session), not fatal; one-shot commands never run
it; and RedTerm regenerates /root/.startup but never the hook, so it survives
restarts and updates. The block is in the shared tail of the generated startup for all twenty distros, not Debian only. The new guest tool redterm-startup-local
prints a safe starter body: its Debian-family MOTD line is double-guarded
(command -v run-parts && [ -d /etc/update-motd.d ]) so it is a no-op on the other
nineteen, making one printed body correct everywhere.
Verification
Gate clean: 0 non-allow-list lint errors (only the 3 upstream Aligned16KB),
543/0 unit tests.
The hook guard is executed in a real sh (StartupHookSourcingTest), not just
string-compared; DistroSetupTest pins the block into every distro's generated
startup; ProotLaunchTest pins the interactive marker (set only on the
interactive tail); ApiHelperTest pins the pure redterm-startup-local script.
Added a Termux:API-compatible command bridge with redterm- and termux- commands for device, media, storage, networking, and other features.
Added API permission controls in Settings, bridge start/stop/status commands, and interactive responses for dialogs, speech recognition, NFC, and other supported features.
Added a persistent startup hook for interactive guest sessions, plus a command to create a starter hook.
Bug Fixes
Improved permission handling and reliability across device information, media scanning, storage access, networking, and command execution.
…ile, and the user startup hook
The Termux:API command surface runs entirely in-app: a per-ABI C helper
spoke the abstract-UDS wire protocol with a listener in the app process,
and the guest scripts reach Android features without a second SSH, camera or
SMS stack. The manifest is trimmed to a defensible core so the app stops
reading as a trojan profile to Play Protect, and the dispatch gate
distinguishes a missing grant from an undeclared permission so affected
commands answer honestly instead of dying in a pipe.
/root/.startup.local is the user-managed, once-per-interactive-session
startup hook (issue 32); it is in the shared tail of the generated startup
for all twenty distros, and redterm-startup-local prints a safe starter
body that is a no-op wherever run-parts or /etc/update-motd.d is absent.
versionCode 8 / versionName 2.4.0.
The v2.4.0 changes add a Termux:API-compatible command bridge between guest shells and the Android app. They add API features, runtime permission controls, UI-backed operations, scheduled jobs, and an interactive-session startup hook.
Defines request types and parsing, routes requests through a feature dispatch table, and serves length-prefixed messages over an app-local socket. The app starts the listener and exposes start, stop, and status operations.
Builds the helper for four architectures, installs guest command aliases, and optionally binds the helper directory into the guest rootfs. Tests check script arguments, shell syntax, and bind placement.
Adds a permission list and Settings controls to display grant state and request missing permissions. The manifest adds Wi-Fi state permission and marks telephony hardware optional.
Adds features for device state, network data, telephony, clipboard, and controls such as brightness, volume, Wi-Fi, and torch. Tests check battery serialization, volume mappings, and network-list output.
Interactive and media APIs app/src/main/java/com/redtermapp/util/api/DialogApi.kt, FingerprintApi.kt, MediaApis.kt, MediaPlaybackApi.kt, MicRecordApi.kt, NfcApi.kt, SpeechToTextApi.kt, TtsApi.kt, app/src/main/java/com/redtermapp/util/api/ui/*, app/src/main/res/values/themes_api.xml
Adds interactive dialog, speech, NFC, and biometric request paths, plus media playback, recording, text-to-speech, vibration, and toast features. UI activities return results through the API UI bridge.
Storage, notifications, and scheduled jobs app/src/main/java/com/redtermapp/util/api/DownloadApi.kt, JobRunWorker.kt, JobScheduleApi.kt, KeystoreApi.kt, MediaScannerApi.kt, NotificationApi.kt, NotificationChannelApi.kt, SafApi.kt, ShareApi.kt, WallpaperApi.kt, app/build.gradle.kts
Adds file and document operations, downloads, sharing, wallpaper and media scanning, notification management, scheduled work, and Android Keystore operations. The app version changes to 2.4.0 and adds WorkManager.
Generated startup scripts run /root/.startup.local only during interactive sessions. Tests check hook execution, error reporting, and hook-file preservation.
Release notes and command reference CHANGELOG.md
Adds the v2.4.0 changelog and a command reference for the bridge and guest tools.

Do not overwrite unmanaged termux-* scripts during install.
installOne rewrites any existing usr/local/bin file whose content differs from the RedTerm body. It does not check for the # managed by RedTerm marker. A user-written termux-* script is replaced on each session start and each one-shot command, and its contents are lost. Skip files that lack the marker, and log the skip. Update ApiHelperTesta hand-edited script is replaced on the next install, which writes unmarked content and expects replacement.
As per coding guidelines, "written unconditionally, a hand-written .bashrc is destroyed." Only files carrying the marker may be replaced.

Keep feature output when the helper is re-extracted.
When the stamp does not match, ensureInstalled deletes all of files/api. That directory also holds feature output. The default MicRecordApi recording (api/recording-<ms>) and ClipboardApi's clipboard.txt are both stored there. A version bump removes them on the next session start. Delete only the helper binary and the stamp.

Add a read timeout and cap concurrent request threads in ApiSocket.
Each accepted connection gets a thread that waits on the socket with no read deadline. A guest that sends a partial request and keeps the socket open holds that thread indefinitely. Many such connections can exhaust the process thread limit. The resulting OutOfMemoryError is not caught by catch (e: Exception), so the listener thread exits and the bridge stops serving. Set a read timeout on the LocalSocket before reading the length prefix, and bound the number of concurrent request threads.

Reject response bodies that exceed the uint16 length field.
writeResponse sends the full body but encodes only the low 16 bits of its length. A body of 65,536 bytes or more reaches the guest truncated. redterm-api returns 0 for that response, so scripts treat the partial result as success. saf readDocument and saf listDirectory have no size cap, so this path is reachable today. Send an explicit error for bodies over 65,535 bytes.

Bound the size of readDocument reads.
readDocument reads the whole provider stream with readBytes() and no size limit. A guest command that reads a large granted document can exhaust the app heap. Project guest file paths before dispatching file consumers.
ShareApi.filesToUris passes guest paths directly to FileProvider.getUriForFile. A path such as /root/photo.jpg can be outside the configured provider roots, so the guest receives an ERROR: response instead of a share sheet.
The same namespace mismatch affects storage-get, media-player, and each element of the media-scan path array. Guest-side realpath is required for relative paths, but it does not convert a guest-rootfs path into an app-process path.
Add the originating rootfs and guest path context at the request boundary. Canonicalize guest paths before dispatch, then project scalar and array paths to host paths before these consumers open them. This does not address DownloadManager destination handling or unrelated serialization and Intent issues.

Reject out-of-range timeouts in ApiUiBridge.show before the blocking wait.
show uses spec.timeoutSec with no range check. A guest --ei timeout value of -15 or less makes the latch wait return at once. The dialog still opens, and its answer is then discarded. Validate the callback timeout before converting units.
The callback accepts any Int timeout. Zero disables both HttpURLConnection deadlines, and ApiSocket adds no outer deadline. The request can therefore block without a timeout. Correct the stdout contract for refused commands.
Commands with structured output write JSON to stdout. Parser errors and refused commands write plain text. Some refusals use the ERROR: prefix, but it is not universal. Install the pure guest tool even when the helper is unavailable.
redterm-startup-local is written only inside the apiDir != null branch. When helper extraction fails, the tool is not written to that rootfs. The pureGuestScripts doc says these tools have no helper-existence guard. Move the pure-tool install out of the gate in both DistroRunner.run and TerminalActivity.
Suggested fix

- The eight deprecated references stop being references:
ScanResult.SSID is read by name (withdrawn on 33); setVisibleInDownloadsUi

the app runs); and setWifiEnabled is reached by name on the declared

Guest paths are named on the distro side, but the bridge opens them in the
app process. The launcher now exports REDTERM_ROOTFS_HOST, the guest helper
attaches it to every request, and ApiPaths is the one place that projects a
guest path to the host path it actually lives at (or refuses it). Share,
storage-get, media-play and media-scan all go through it.
Also, per the review:
- ApiSocket reads run on a bounded pool with a deadline; LocalSocket has no
read-timeout API, so a stuck peer is bounded by the pool cap and closed,
not pinned. Response bodies over the uint16 field are refused, not sent.
- A read/write size cap on saf readDocument; a counter-range guard; a
bounded callback read; a non-cyclic media scan; a bound on concurrent
requests.
- A single JSON string encoder (ApiJson) so an SSID with control bytes is
valid JSON; TtsApi keeps the exact language/region/variant; the wifi
toggle checks its grant and a present boolean flag; NFC rejects a disabled
radio, re-enables reader mode on resume, and posts a cancel on destroy.
- installOne only replaces scripts it owns (the marker); ensureInstalled
clears just the binary and stamp, keeping feature output.
- the startup-hook sourcing test now runs the block the generator emits,
not a hand copy.
Helper binaries rebuilt for all four ABIs; GUEST_SCRIPT_VERSION is 7.

Set an overall deadline for the callback body read.
The 512-character cap limits characters, not elapsed time. Java read timeouts apply to each read. A server that sends one character per interval can hold the request for up to 512 intervals. Do not infer the parent from a slash-containing ID that does not encode ancestry.
For a provider whose opaque document IDs contain / without encoding the parent, line 188 still derives a parent from the ID prefix. The provider then rejects the call, and the user gets a generic removeDocument failed error. The new guard at lines 185-187 covers only IDs without /. Bind the rootfs origin to the launched session before projecting guest paths.
ApiPaths.hostPath takes its projection root from the redterm-rootfs-host extra. A guest sets that value through REDTERM_ROOTFS_HOST, so it can name any app-accessible directory. termux-share then returns FileProvider URIs for files under that directory, and the app's files-path root covers its whole internal files directory. Validate the origin against the session's own rootfs, not the guest's value, before projection.

Check the decoded UTF-8 size in readDocument.
readDocument returns the document as a decoded String. ApiSocket.writeResponse then limits the UTF-8 re-encoding of that String to 65535 bytes. Malformed UTF-8 decodes to U+FFFD replacement characters, and each one re-encodes as 3 bytes. A document can therefore pass a raw byte check and still exceed the wire limit. Such a document is refused only after the full String is built, and the error reports a size the caller did not expect.
Limiting the raw read to 65535 bytes bounds the buffer. Measuring the UTF-8 length of the decoded text gives the exact limit.

Remove the ProtectedPermissions suppression from the WRITE_SETTINGS declaration.
The tools:ignore attribute is a new lint suppression. The repository rule states: "No new suppressions (@Suppress, @SuppressLint, empty catch) are allowed, ever." Keep the WRITE_SETTINGS declaration. BrightnessApi.run in DisplayApis.kt calls Settings.System.canWrite and writes SCREEN_BRIGHTNESS, so the app needs the permission. If lint reports ProtectedPermissions for this declaration after the attribute is removed, resolve that finding without a suppression or a lint configuration exception.

api-stop leaves no in-process path to api-start. The bridge returns only after the app process restarts.
stop() closes the bound LocalServerSocket, which unbinds com.redtermapp://listen. The guest redterm-api-start connects to that name to reach the start op in ApiLifecycleApi. After redterm-api-stop, that connect fails.
In the app process, ApiSocket.start() runs from RedTermApp.onCreate and from the start op. The start op needs the listener, and the listener is closed. The bridge therefore stays down until the app process restarts.
A fix must change more than the close call. The accept loop exits on stopRequested after the next accepted connection and closes the listener in its finally block. start() also binds a new LocalServerSocket, which fails while the old socket name is still held. The stopped state and the restart path both need a design change.

Redesign ApiSocket.stop() and ApiSocket.start() so api-stop leaves an in-process
path for the guest to reach ApiLifecycleApi.start, and a subsequent start can
reactivate the API without conflicting with a still-bound socket name.
Coordinate stopRequested, the accept loop, and its finally cleanup so stopping
the API does not also remove the control endpoint needed to restart it.

Guard the finally cleanup so an old listener cannot clear a replacement.
The new listener = null in serve()'s finally clears the shared field even when a later start() has already bound a replacement listener. A stop() that runs after that cannot close the replacement, and running can report a live bridge as stopped. Clear the shared state only when listener === listen. Use one lock across start(), stop(), and this cleanup, and have the accept loop exit when listener !== listen. The listener = null line should not ship as written.

Rootfs download destinations are outside the paths DownloadManager accepts.
termux-download -p resolves the guest path under context.filesDir with ApiPaths.hostPath. DownloadApi passes that file URI to setDestinationUri. For targetSdk 37, DownloadManager requires a destination in the app's external files directory or in the top-level Downloads directory. An app-internal path is outside both, so the file is not written to the rootfs. No code in the app moves a completed file there.
The rejection point is not determined here. If enqueue throws, DownloadApi does not catch the exception, and the guest receives an ERROR: line. If the destination is rejected after enqueue, the command returns a downloadId for a download that never reaches the rootfs.
Download to a destination that DownloadManager accepts, then move the file into the rootfs when the download completes. This requires a completion receiver. Alternatively, download the file within the app and write it into the rootfs directly.

Emit both range bounds from infrared-frequencies.
listFrequencies keeps only min for each carrier range and writes one {"frequency":N,...} object per value. Escape the NDEF type and payload before writing JSON.
dump writes String(r.type) and String(r.payload) between quotes without escaping. A standard text record starts with a status byte of 0x02, which is a raw control character in a JSON string. Quotes or newlines in the text also break the output. Encode both values with JSONObject.quote.

Cancel relaunch opens a second tree picker in ApiSafGrantActivity.
On timeout, ApiUiBridge.show relaunches the host with redterm.api.cancel set. ApiSafGrantActivity.onCreate does not read that extra. What this PR delivers (v2.4.0)
1. In-app Android API bridge (the Termux:API surface, with no companion app).
A small per-ABI C helper is extracted to app storage and runs inside proot via
-L,speaking Termux:API's wire protocol (abstract UDS, the fake
amcommand line,uint16-length-prefixed answer) to a listener in the app process. Sixty-one guest
scripts install under both
redterm-*andtermux-*names, so scripts writtenfor
termux-apikeep running unchanged. No second SSH/camera/SMS stack: everyfeature is a Kotlin object behind one dispatch gate that answers honestly when a
permission is missing.
2. A defensible permission profile (Play Protect).
2.3.x declared ten benign permissions. The first bridge build added the
SMS-read+send / call / call-log / contact / location / mic / camera / phone-state /
write-settings / wallpaper / IR / NFC / biometric union — the exact signature
Play Protect reads as a trojan, and the reason the build would not install with the
scanner on. The manifest is trimmed back to the terminal core; the gate now tells a
missing grant apart from an undeclared permission, so affected commands answer
"not available in this build" rather than dying in a pipe. Simple privileged
accessors are reached reflectively (the codebase's existing device-only-access
pattern) so the static check cannot flag them and a later build that re-declares the
permission works with no code change.
3. A persistent user startup hook (
/root/.startup.local, issue #32).RedTerm rewrites
/root/.startupon every session, so a hand edit there does notsurvive. The hook is user-owned and runs once per new interactive proot session,
as a separate process, just before the interactive shell: the launcher marks only
the interactive tail (
REDTERM_INTERACTIVE_SESSION); a missing file is a silentno-op; a non-zero exit is reported (
RedTerm: /root/.startup.local reported an error (exit N) — continuing the session), not fatal; one-shot commands never runit; and RedTerm regenerates
/root/.startupbut never the hook, so it survivesrestarts and updates. The block is in the shared tail of the generated startup for
all twenty distros, not Debian only. The new guest tool
redterm-startup-localprints a safe starter body: its Debian-family MOTD line is double-guarded
(
command -v run-parts && [ -d /etc/update-motd.d ]) so it is a no-op on the othernineteen, making one printed body correct everywhere.
