DIY First Folio

DIY First Folio is an interactive tool for learning how early modern printers produced Shakespeare's First Folio (1623) in William and Isaac Jaggard's printing house. Working from digital images of the Folger Shakespeare Library's copy no. 68, it walks through how pages were printed onto sheets and nested into gatherings, how Troilus and Cressida was nearly left out of the book, and how the preliminary pages were assembled.

Origins

DIY First Folio grew out of the Folger Institute's 2016-17 micro-grant initiative Teaching Shakespeare to Undergraduates, funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. It was also an outgrowth of The Wonder of Will: 400 Years of Shakespeare, the Folger's national initiative to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death in 2016.
