Review: TypeScript 5.9.3 → 7.0.2 (major) — held

7.0.2 was published on 2026-07-08, so its age is fine. CI fails in setup, before any build:

TypeScriptFoundIsNot5Or6: @effect/language-service supports TypeScript 5.x and 6.x; for TypeScript 7.x and forward use @effect/tsgo

The root prepare script patches @effect/language-service into TypeScript, and that patch does not support 7.x. Moving to TypeScript 7 needs work beyond the version bump: replacing the language-service patch with @effect/tsgo (or running TypeScript 6 side by side), and confirming that typescript-eslint, tsc-based builds and declaration output all work on the native compiler.

This update is held until that migration work is done. It will be reviewed afresh then.

Review: held. This update needs tooling work beyond the version bump.

TypeScript 7 is the native Go port of the compiler. It is a major release, and it does not offer the JavaScript compiler API that the 5.x line does.

What was checked:

  • CI fails during install. The prepare script runs effect-language-service patch, and @effect/language-service refuses TypeScript 7. Its error says to use @effect/tsgo, or to run TypeScript 6 alongside 7.
  • The repo relies on the patched language service to enforce its Effect conventions, so dropping the patch is not an option.
  • @typescript-eslint also depends on the TypeScript JavaScript API. Its support for 7 needs checking before the move.

The upgrade is still wanted. It needs a decision between @effect/tsgo and running 6 alongside 7, then its own pull request. This pull request stays open until that work lands.
